IE8 Changing Default Folder Path for Temporary Internet Files

I am new to Windows 7 and have just purchased a new computer and am currently trying to set it up to my requirements. Being a novice to Windows 7 and IE8, I may be overlooking the obvious, so any help will be appreciated.

With IE8 and Windows 7 (64 bit), I would like to change the default location of the Temporary Internet Files folder. My drive C: is an SSD and I only want this for main program storage and another larger drive (F:) for general working data storage.

I have tried the following to change the default folder path for Temporary Internet Files in IE8:

Step 1. Launch the IE8 web browser.

Step 2. A list of menus is displayed on the top right hand corner of the window. Click Tools.

Step 3. A dropdown menu will appear. At the bottom of it, click Internet Options.

Step 4. In the Internet Options window that appears, in the Browsing history section, click Settings.

Step 5. A new window called Temporary Internet Files and History Settings will appear. Under Current location: you will notice the default path to the Temporary Internet Files folder. To change it click Move Folder.

Step 6. Select the new folder path -> when you’re done click OK.

(I have created a mirror path of the original storage location on the different drive, ie from C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files to F:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files)

Step 7. In the Temporary Internet Files and History Settings window click OK. Confirm your actions by clicking Yes when presented with the Windows will now…Do you want to continue? Agree to be logged out for change to take place.

Having gone through this process, when I open IE8 next time to see if the change has taken place it hasn’t. I have tried doing this at least 6 times. On each occasion It has returned to the original default location of C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files.

Are there any suggestions as to how to make the new location permanent?

Many thanks in advance for any help or assistance.

I haven't done it myself, but shouldn't there be a step 8...Reboot. Just a thought.

    I have also tried your suggested Step 8 . . . Reboot.

It still did not make it the permanent location.

    Thanks anyway, Roncerr

Not sure why this is happening, but try using a simpler folder path, say F:\tempint (or something like that). Then reboot.

I have tried what you suggested Bill2.

It is still the same . . . reverts back to original location.

Hmm..lets try doing it via the registry.

Open Registry Editor by typing REGEDIT in Start, Run dialog. Navigate to the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ User Shell Folders

In the right-pane, double-click the value named Cache and set it's data to the new TIF folder (E.g. F:\Temporary Internet Files or something like that).

Similarly, make the changes in this registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Shell Folders

    Close Registry Editor. Reboot.

Note that this will only relocate the folder, it wont copy the current TIF, you can delete those manually before you make the above changes.

Also, best practices- export both the reg keys that you will be modifying to your desktop first, if this method doesnt work, you just need to click on the saved .reg file to go back to previous values.

That has certainly done the job Bill2.

Very many thanks for your prompt and helpful responses.
