If I have loaded some of my emails into Windows Live Mail via the import option but my computer restarted during the process and stopped the rest of them from importing........can I keep the contacts that I have in there....and try to re-import??? Or will that mess things up????? Will it duplicate the ones that I already have in there or how will that work.....?? My import files is a cvs file saved from another WLM contacts address book.

you could try deleting your contacts, then reimport everything again.

it might work.

then again, it might not. :)

Importing Contacts to WLM

I don't want to delete the contacts. I did that earlier yesterday and screwed up the whole Windows Live Program.....couldn't even get into it after that. No clue why in the world it messed things up. I don't want to delete contacts because I don't want to have to go through all of that again. I had to do a system restore after that in order to fix the problem. Weird stuff. So that's why I'm asking if I can re-import the same file again.........

sorry, i thought you were worried that it may result in multiple repeated contacts.

in that case don't delete the contacts you've already worked hard to get.

as far as re-importing the whole file again, you've got two choices:

1 - try it

2 - or don't :)

Importing contacts

:p

Do you think it will duplicate the ones that are in there or do you know?

i don't know. i suppose it all depends on what exactly went wrong before.

if it does duplicate, how many of them will you need to delete?

...but if you delete your contacts before reimporting, you won't get any repeats...:p

maybe the pc crashed in the first place because it didn't want to import so many contacts - maybe you need something more robust than the free wlm (you are using the new 2011 version?) - maybe outlook?

you could try exporting your current contacts, so you could reimport them if things get worse.

then you could try deleting them maybe, then reimport the original file.

it's starting to get complicated, but hey, so are computers...i may sound vague and don't know what i'm talking about, but we are in unknown territory here, we've got to explore and report back our findings.

If I understand correctly, you have your contacts safely tucked away in a csv file and possibly in a wab file (if they originally came from Outlook Express). So you can delete the "Windows Live Contacts" folder within Window Explorer after first closing WLM. When you reopen WLM it will create a brand new clean version of the "Windows Live Contacts" folder. Now it may turn out to be easier to import either the csv or the original wab into Windows Explorer's "<username>/Contacts" folder. Then after that looks complete and successful, go to WLM contacts page to import from "local Windows user" instead of the csv.

I forgot to mention that if you're using WLM with the "sign-in" feature, your contacts are being saved at contacts.live.com and will repopulate your new clean version of your contact list. So to truely start over, do not reopen WLM in the "sign-in" mode until you first go to the website and delete all the contacts there as well. So to sum up the start-over process for contacts, with the program WLM closed, delete the contacts on the website AND your local folder "Windows Live Contacts" in either order and then when you reopen WLM it will be clean of all contacts, ready to try a new import.
