The two mail programs I posted the links for are both called "Windows Live Mail". The older version (2009/2010) does not have the ribbon while the 2011 version does. WLM is the free mail program supported by Microsoft for Windows 7. "Windows Mail" was the free mail program that came with Vista and is not supported on Windows 7, so it would be difficult to revert to it on Windows 7.

Regarding the error message, the earlier version will give you an error message upon installation, whether you used the "web installer" or the full download. So in either case, you must fully uninstall via Programs and Features the 2011 version of "Windows Live Essentials" so you can revert to the older version of "Windows Live Essentials", which includes the older non-ribbon version of Windows Live Mail (not Vista's Windows Mail).

I would write down the account settings so you can set them up in the new (old) mail program. If you had been signing in to WLM 2011, your contacts should be preserved on the website "contacts.live.com", otherwise you should export them before uninstalling. The messages you want to save should also be exported for future import in case they don't show up in the new install.

Thanks so much for replying, your going to think (What is this girl doing on a computer?) utt where do I find the correct account settings to set them up after I download the (older version) and which link should I use, the 1st one you posted or the second one? I hate that Ribbon thing they have in Windows Live Mail 2011.

Once again Thanks for your help!

I reverted because no matter what I'd do (repair etc) WLM2011 wouldn't send and recieve my last mail account.

eg Mail 01 (Checked), Mail 02 (Checked), Mail 03 (ignored).

I even tried changing the default , the order, and disabling the last account, but then it just refused to check the new "last" account.

Like others, I've hidden the update until I hear it's fixed or updated.

Either one of the links under the section "Windows Live Essentials 2009" will work. I'd use the one that includes the word "web" which means "web installer" which means you only download the components of the Essentials package you need for the programs you want. (Faster download & less space used up on your hard drive.)

If you are now using 2011, you'll should look for "Accounts". Another way to find the settings for each email account you are using is to right click on each account you have listed in the left pane (above the folder group) and select "Properties".

OK, everything went well and I am now using the Windows Live Essentials 2009.. YIPPEE.. There is one question I have.. I cannot find the Send/Receive button to add to the tool bar, it is not even a choice to pick when I "customize" the tool bar, any suggestions?

It also did not transfer over my calendars? Does that need to be done separately?

Thanking you in advance

'send and receive' is 'sync' on wlm 2009.

i'm not sure about the calendars, i've never used them, but i believe they are tied into your hotmail/live account, and you may have to sync them seperately the first time, but don't quote me on that.

old version

I have the older version of Live Mail on the XP machines and I cannot find any way of adding senders to a blocked list in that safety option like I can with the 7 machines.

Any solutions as I don't seem to be able to get an update for the XP's either.

I meant to add too that any sevens forums messages are marked by a small yellow envelope that doesn't open when clicked on. One can see the message but am wondering what this is all about.

QFE1 for Windows Live Essentials 2011

Microsoft says the updates should show up on Windows Update. However it looks like it may not offer a major upgrade to a new version (like 2009 to 2011) only updates to the installed version. (I'm still running 2009, and have never been offered an upgrade to 2011 via Windows Update.)

Removed Entire WLEssentials

Truthfully, I can't remember which Live Essentials I installed with my new computer (Windows 7) - it was either 2010 or 2011. I was DISMAYED to find out I could not use background sound etc. Web research found many others as upset as I and I took the advice of one of the other users and deleted the entire Live Essentials package and found a download of Live Essentials 2009 - which still had (has) the background features I NEED. I lost the modern fancy menus and probably a bunch of other modern BS dreamed up by the M/S programmers and approved by BGates - but I was used to Outlook Express and am now VERY HAPPY and still creative with my outgoing email. I hope in a later release they will restore the background stuph. At that time I will update....

WinXP/ Win7x64/ Mac OSX Snow Leopard - Multi Boot

My current scenario:

Win XP Pro SP3

Windows Live Mail Desktop
Version 2009
Build 14.0.8089.0726

I dont need or use other WL Apps at this point. I don't need WL Messenger at all. I might want to use Live Writer later on. I do have an older version installed but not actively used right now.

Is this the best version thats being used/ recommended?

I dont really care for or need the background / wallpaper beautification tools/ features.

Although I'd like to be able to receive & read the Calendar Request (I just received one such email).

What are the Pros and Cons of going from the CURRENT VERSION to NEWER ONES or the LATEST ones?
