Windows 7: Unable to send links since removing livemail

Hi,

Since I removed Live Mail yesterday because it kept opening without a password and using hotmail in combination with Live, I am unable to send links to emailadresses.

I have set my default programs to firefox, and "use current email program".



No luck.

Do not want to use Live Mail again unless there is a proper logon procedure with a password so my inbox does not pop up onscreen for the whole world to see.

WLM (the desktop program) works as the email programs it replaces (Outlook Express or Windows Mail). Since it's a program running on your computer it starts up like any other program would. OTOH web based email is a web site (like hotmail.com or gmail.com) that has no idea whose email is being requested unless you log in. On your PC all the programs are logged into when you log in to Windows with your individual Windows login (username and password). Of course if there is usually only one user, automatic login to that username is often done unless one wants the added privacy of using Windows login with a password.

This may also be the problem with Default Programs. A website is not a program so it can't be a default program. There was a special "tool" program that was created to make Hotmail the default on Vista, but apparently it doesn't work in Windows 7.

hi, thanks; let me see if I understand this correctly : I need to be logged in somewhere to be able to do certain things like forward a link,

I do log in with my live ID (which now goes to hotmail when I select the inbox on the messenger start page), so that should identify me shouldn't it ?

This is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over my head really, thanks for taking the time to help !

As Roncerr said. Firefox is a browser, and can only be used as a mail client for web based (yahoo, AOL, and live, etc)

You dont have "a current email program" because you removed WLM.

It would be easier just to re-install WLM and figure out how to have your issue fixed.

I think maybe I should just reinstall live mail, but there is that thing about the inbox coming into view without the need for a logon; so I guess I'm back to the original question : how do I stop this ????

I know there are more people out there who are bothered by this, isn't there some sort of setting we can use ??????

I am vague about your specific problem. Do you have WLM running all the time and it pops up, or do you launch it and it pops up?

Where are you getting you email from? Is it Live, AOL, Yahoo, or something else?

As with any other program that resides on your pc, WLM can be hidden from others only by using your pc's Windows Logon. So everyone who wishes to use you pc would log on to either their own or a guest account with it's own set of folders completely different from yours. You would log in to your own account (on the pc, not on any website) with your own username and password.

sorry guys, I made an enormous mistake !!!!!!!!

I simply neglected to sign out of my Live account when handing over to other people !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Which is why my inbox remained active.

I am cringing with humiliation as I write..................................

Have reinstalled Live Essentials including the mail program(however : I still prefer hotmail because it has better smileys and winks..........................................)

Would buy you all an apologetic drink if I could....................................!!!!!!

(and yes : the link problem is also solved..............................should have realised that this always goes straight to live mail but naively assumed it would pick hotmail if the other was no longer available !)

Guess what ? Seems I was partly right after all, anyone clicking on the Live Messenger icon in the task bar will still get the Live inbox page !!!

However : if you delete the shortcut to Live Mail in the All Programs menu at Start this no longer happens !!!!!


Am wary of crying Victory too soon but I really think that is the solution.

In your posts you referred to "logging out of your Live account" and deleting a shortcut to "Live Mail". Are you referring to the desktop app called "Windows Live Mail" or the Live.com website? In my version of WLM (pre-2011) the only way I can log out of my account is my selecting the option within WLM to "stop signing in".
