Internet Explorer keeps shutting down On my new Dell XPS, Windows keeps shutting down Internet Explorer. My older XP machines do not have this problem. Here's what the notices look like:
When I get this, I close the program, re-open IE and, usually, it loads fine. Today, I've gotten this message about a dozen time. It happens at my office, too. Any suggestions?

I was getting that with IE 9 beta, eventually it wouldn't launch at all. Haven't had it happen with IE 8 though. Maybe this will help. How to optimize Internet Explorer
EDIT: I never did figure out why IE 9 crashed and ended up going back to IE 8. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built OS Windows 7 Ultimate AMD64 CPU AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition Deneb 3.7GHz Motherboard Asus M4N68T-M V2 µATX Motherboard Memory 8GB 4GBx2 Kingston PC10600 DDR3 1333 Memory Graphics Card BFG NVIDIA Geforce 220GT 1 Gig DDR2 PCIe Sound Card VIA VT1708s High Definition Audio 8-channel Onboard Monitor(s) Displays 2 x 19" I-INC AG191D TFT Flat Panel Screen Resolution 1280x1024 x 2 Keyboard Logitech Internet 600 Mouse Logitech Wireless Trackman Wheel PSU Retail Plus 465 Watt Case Power Up Black ATX Mid-Tower Case Cooling Stock heatsink and fan Hard Drives 500 Gig WesternDigital SATA-300 Drive Internet Speed 80 Mbps Down 30 Mbps Up Antivirus Microsoft Security Essentials Browser Internet Explorer 10 Other Info HP DVD1040e Lightscribe - External USB2 |

You may have a bad plug-in that is killing Internet Explorer. You can "reset" Internet Explorer as follows: - Open "Control Panel"
- In the search box, type "internet" (without quotes)
- Click "Internet Options"
- Click the "Advanced" tab
- Click "Reset..."
The above procedure will unload all extensions, BHO's, plugins, etc that may be crashing Internet Explorer. It will also reset all your IE security settings and you home page. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU AMD Phenom 9600 Quad Core Motherboard ASUS MB-M3A32-MVP Deluxe/WiFi Memory 2 x A-Data 2GB DDR2-800 Graphics Card ASUS ATI Radeon HD 2400PRO Sound Card C-Media 7.1 Surround Monitor(s) Displays Sahara 19" Screen Resolution 1600x1200 Keyboard Mercury Mouse Logitech PSU 800W Case Thermaltake Tai-Chi Cooling Tai-Chi Water Cooler Hard Drives 1 x 80GB Seagate (IDE)

Gosh, I was hoping that would work. It has crashed twice since doing the reset. Any other suggestions?
Thanks,

I moved to Firefox because IE8 was continuously faulting.
I came across this utility and never used it so can't vouch for it. Fix Internet Explorer

Mike Hmm...
You're the first i've encountered where "reset" hasn't worked...
Try running an Anti-Virus scan. Maybe there is some virus or malware that's killnig it? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU AMD Phenom 9600 Quad Core Motherboard ASUS MB-M3A32-MVP Deluxe/WiFi Memory 2 x A-Data 2GB DDR2-800 Graphics Card ASUS ATI Radeon HD 2400PRO Sound Card C-Media 7.1 Surround Monitor(s) Displays Sahara 19" Screen Resolution 1600x1200 Keyboard Mercury Mouse Logitech PSU 800W Case Thermaltake Tai-Chi Cooling Tai-Chi Water Cooler Hard Drives 1 x 80GB Seagate (IDE)

I never had a problem with reset "working" it just never solved the problem of IE8 crashing. Reset was the only advice I received and it didn't work - Firefox has been fine. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Own build (+ Recased Acer Aspire x1800) OS Windows 7x64 Home Premium SP1 x 2 CPU Intel i7 2600k Motherboard ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe Memory G.Skill Ripjaws (DDR3-1600) 2x4GB Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTS 450; Intel HD Graphics 3000(GT2+) Monitor(s) Displays Dell Ultrasharp IPS panel U2311H, Samsung SyncMaster P2350 Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech MK520 (wireless) Mouse Logitech MK520 PSU Seasonic M12II 520W Case Lian Li Lancool PC-K60 Cooling Case: 1x120mm, 3x140mm CPU: Hyper 212+ Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB (000F), Seagates 1TB Barracuda ST31000528AS + Internet Speed 6-7 Mbps Antivirus Norton NIS, Malwarebytes on 2 (MSE on 3rd PC) Browser FireFox Other Info Audio: Logitech Z523 2.1 |

This problem doesnt seem to have a definite solution, so try a couple of these and see if it helps.
1) Click Start, Click All P rograms – Accessories – Systems Tools, Click Internet Explorer (No add-ons).
2) Try turning off IE, then turn on again.
Click Start, then click Control Panel. Click Programs and Feature. In the tasks pane, click Turn Windows features on or off. In the list of windows features, clear the check box next to Internet Explorer 8. You receive a warning message in a pop-up window. Click Yes.
3) Run an sfc scan to fix possibly corrupted system files. SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Too many to describe... OS Windows 7 x64 pro/ Windows 7 x86 Pro/ XP SP3 x86 |

Time for me to totally disable it. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Own build (+ Recased Acer Aspire x1800) OS Windows 7x64 Home Premium SP1 x 2 CPU Intel i7 2600k Motherboard ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe Memory G.Skill Ripjaws (DDR3-1600) 2x4GB Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTS 450; Intel HD Graphics 3000(GT2+) Monitor(s) Displays Dell Ultrasharp IPS panel U2311H, Samsung SyncMaster P2350 Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech MK520 (wireless) Mouse Logitech MK520 PSU Seasonic M12II 520W Case Lian Li Lancool PC-K60 Cooling Case: 1x120mm, 3x140mm CPU: Hyper 212+ Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB (000F), Seagates 1TB Barracuda ST31000528AS + Internet Speed 6-7 Mbps Antivirus Norton NIS, Malwarebytes on 2 (MSE on 3rd PC) Browser FireFox Other Info Audio: Logitech Z523 2.1 |

I was looking around for a fix for IE crashing and found this Microsoft link: FIX: Windows Internet Explorer 7 may crash when you use it to visit a Web site . I ran the fix and it's worked, so far. IE has not crashed since!
