IE8 is not an option when choosing a default program for a .tif file

I'm trying to make IE8 the default program for opening tif files. When I go through the manual procress, it's not an option. I navigate to iexplorer.exe and select it but it still doesn't "take." My tif files continue to open in Picture Viewer which I don't want. I've also tried to right click and choose open with and have the same issue. Anyone else seeing this??

IE cannot open .tiff because those are picture files. You can, however, open .gif files with the IE.

But I have other computers that do it. We use alternatiff plugin and it's been working on most computers except these three. Thank you for your quick response, though!

No idea what this plug-in is. But why on earth do you want to use IE to display a picture file. There are a thousand better ways.

I can verify that on my Vista/IE8 setup tiff files go to "Windows Photo Gallery". If I force IE8 to be the default instead, I get an open or save dialog box but choosing "open" only produces the dialog box again.

According to this page: AlternaTIFF Documentation there is an activeX version for IE. Have you tried the ActiveX version of alternatiff instead of the "plug-in" version? All versions are available here: AlternaTIFF - Free TIFF Plug-in (in spite of the title).
