Windows 7 - Firefox 3.0.11 - Missing Icon

Firefox 3.0.11 - Missing Icon

System specs (long version) are in my profile
Short version

MBO:Asrock X58 Deluxe
Proc: i7 920 (not OC)
Mem: 6GB triple-channel
Win 7 Build 7229 (x64) - clean install the day after it appeared in the wild

Installed FF (32-bit), pinned it to the task bar. Some sort time later, the Icon changed. Uninstalled, re-installed. Didn't pin it to the task bar. Some sort time later, the icon changed again. Installed the update (from 3.0.10 to 3.0.11) See the attached images.

Anyone have any idea of what is happening here and how to fix/prevent it? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Also - forgot to add that in the above, I added the "noscript" add-on. Could that have been the issue?

Hello Scott,

Sometimes changing the icon of the shortcuts in the Start Menu for these to the same default one a few times will restore it again.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Workaround

In the mean time, I made a copy of the firefox.exe file and used it as the default browser. It may have problems in the next update, but is an immediate solution.

When you make the copy the icon get restored, but if you erase the old file and rename it, the icon get lost again.

You have to open firefox with the copied exe.

FWIW ....

I've since done a clean install (7600.16384) and installed FF 3.5. I've not seen the behavior since.

So, for me the problem appears to be solved (at least for now )

Rebuild the Icon Cache:

Icon Cache - Rebuild

That should sort it!

last 2 days suddenly I am also having this problem, unpinned FF but it did not solve the missing icon. Will try your solution & report back if that solved the problem.
Thanks

You also need to clear the thumbnail cache for the larger icon views when clearing the icon cache for Win 7, this can be done easiest by running 'Disk Cleanup' ('cleanmgr.exe') and ticking 'Thumbnail Cache'.

not sure why & how but the missing icon reappeared on its own after few boots.

Icon again gone missing, seems its playing hide n seek.

As suggested by anistar, I deleted the thumbnail cache & that got my icons back, hope it stays like that now.

I had this problem and fixed it like this:

1. Click on Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox. Right click on Mozilla Firefox and click on Properties.
2. On the Shortcut Tab click on Open File Location.
3. Right click on the Firefox icon (that looks like it is supposed to) and drag it to your desktop - create shortcut there.
4. Unpin the Firefox shortcut from the task bar and delete any incorrect Firefox icons from your Start menu.
5. Right click on the Firefox icon on your desktop and pin it to your task bar, and to your Start menu if you so choose.

yes the above steps works
1. Close all folder windows that are currently open.
2. Launch Task Manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence, or by running taskmgr.exe.
3. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
4. Click the End process button when asked for confirmation.
5. From the File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run…)
6. Type CMD.EXE, and click OK
7. In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:

CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
DEL IconCache.db /a
EXIT
8. In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)
9. cleanmgr.exe
10. cleanup drive c:
11. tick thumbnail for delete and press ok
12. now when cleanmgr delete the thumbnail open Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)
13. and type explorer.exe its 100% works
