Action Center fix for IE8 fails

Periodically I get this message in Action Center:
Action Center fix for IE8 fails-capture.png

I go to the page linked: Error message in Mshtml.dll occurs when you use Windows Internet Explorer 8 on a computer that is running Windows 7: "Event ID: 1000"

It tells me at the bottom that I need to get the fix from the Windows Update site, which when I click it hangs my browser.

So I click the link below that for the Update involved which I need to replace 978207 (installed) which takes me to a page which hangs.

So far the only hangs I have experienced as such are the ones taking me to the fixes for hangs which it tells me I am having.

Are you trying to get that update Greg? Or just commenting on your Catch-22 situation? :) If you want the update, go here:

Download the Windows 7 Security monthly updates and patches

2nd from the bottom. Site is 100% safe.

Thanks Guy, I already have 978207.

Was trying to see which update they said needs to replace it when it hangs.

Nice site, tho. Doesn't hang, either

This may be the long way around, but would it help if you un-installed IE8, then re-installed it?

    EDIT:
That mshtml.dll might be corrupt, and a re-install might fix it for you.

I think it is hilarious that they tell me I have a prob with IE8 crashing which it never does, then it crashes when I connect to their linked fix.

    See there, we told ya!

The linked-to website just redirects you to the item in your control panel "System and Maintenance>>Windows Update". So just go directly to Windows Update on your PC and search for updates. Last "Patch Tuesday" 12/14/2010, there was a Cumulative Security Update for IE8 which should be shown in your update history. Click the date installed heading so you can view the most recent updates at the top of the list. Go back to the first page to do a search for updates to see if you are missing anything.

    It's there. KB2416400 on 12/15.

Maybe that will stop the Action Center messages.

    Thanks.
