Google Chrome / Chromium help with user profiles

    Hello,

I have a few problems that I have with regards to Google Chrome. Specifically with user profiles.

I have two laptops and they both used to run Google Chrome, until this new update came along. Think it was version 45.0.something, but I'm not sure. It wiped out my list of plugins, thus making Chrome unusable for me.

My main laptop has already had Google Chrome removed as default browser and Slimjet (a Chromium based browser that supports all plugins) installed. It is signed into my Google Account, so all of my settings are transferred between Chrome and SJ (because SJ is a Chromium based browser and allows Google sign ons).

My secondary laptop is where the problems are. It still runs Google Chrome and is NOT signed into a Google Account - as my Google Account has separate user settings that need to be kept separate. What I need is for the current themes/settings/extensions etc on this Chrome (which doesn't have a Google Account set up on it) to be transferred to a user profile - so that when I install SlimJet on this laptop, I can add this user profile on, and effectively have two user profiles - my main one linked to my Google Account and this secondary profile - and both need to be individually selected.

Can anyone help me out on here? Thanks!

    Hi spotify,

Just copy the user profile hierarchy and store it somewhere. It's at c:\users\<user name>\appdata\local\google\etc..

Clear cache first to save space and time.

Now install Slimjet and let it create a user profile. Close SJ, and copy the chrome profile into the SJ hierarchy where it belongs.

Hi, thanks for the quick response.

I won't be able to do much tonight; I'll have to have a look tomorrow sometime, but from what I can see if I go to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data, it then has all of my user data that is stored in Chrome. The cache doesn't seem too big but I might clear it anyway.

Once I have opened Slimjet, created the profile, and I haven't added my Google Account (because I need this profile to be separate) then I open up C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Slimjet\User Data and then copy across everything that was in the Chrome user data folder, then it should be ok?

If this doesn't work, would I then need to make a Google Account as a test and then hook up the current Chrome 45.0.x stuff to this test account - that way signing into SJ under this test would preserve the settings?

Thanks once again for your help with sorting out these chrome issues! If only Google had kept NPAPI support then I wouldn't need to have gone through all of this...

I'm not 100% clear on the desired user profile scheme. But if you want to end up with 2 SJ profiles, first let SJ create both of them afresh, then merge the saved chrome profile with one of the SJ profiles. I do this all the time. What I transfer is under a fourth user profile on one machine, and I transfer it to the "Default"user profile folder on other machines. 100% effective on Windows, but extensions don't work when transferred to Linux for some reason I haven't figured out yet.

    Hi, thanks for the reply.

I have managed to get back on to the aforementioned laptop, have installed Slimjet on to it and am in the process of copying a user profile on to it, from the saved Chrome profile.

If I need to use my own profile then I can make a second user under slimjet and use the second user to sign in to my google account for my setup - thus leaving the first user profile in place.

Thank you once again for your help. I shall edit this post or update the thread to let you know of the result.

Edit: The copy across method didn't work - however, I used a test Google Account to transfer everything across, and I used Slimjet's own New Tab page (rather than the Chrome new tab page) to transfer across the custom webpages on the NT page - as Slimjet allows you to directly enter links into the New Tab page links. All sorted now on both laptops.
