THE FIX for Windows mail after the SP1 Update

If you like and trust a web base email account, I like the old windows mail better.

Will I lose all my messages?

Go to your C-Drive and go to the Program folder which in put the Windows Mail folder which you got from your old vista OS. Copy and save it to a thumb drive and also you can save it to your desktop. After that DELETE it from your programs folder. If it won't let you delete it, you must take OWNER SHIP of the file, I will put the Reg file on here so you can downlaod it. Go ahead and download and install the SP1 from MS. After install you will get a pop up saying Windows mail MSOE.DLL is missing, just click ok. Go Back into the program folder, you will see that SP1 put a new windows mail folder in there, DELETE IT. Then paste your old windows mail back in there, The one from VISTA . Your mail should work again just like before.

If you install SP1 already you should have a restore point from MS they put in, and also if you have a copy of the Windows mail folder from Vista remove the one SP1 put in there and replace it with the Vista one. See if that works before restoring.

Nope, after you put the folder back in your program folder, and open your mail, it will be the same as you left it. And if you are thinking about installing Internet explorer 9, think twice, IE9 will change your windows mail even if you take out the folder. You will lose the paperclip to save pictures or any other attachment.

Yes that's the whole point of this thread. When I first lost Windows Mail and had to use that Live Mail I absolutely hated it.. I think I searched for weeks or even longer before finding this Forum and the fix. I hope I never lose my Windows Mail again. That was an awful experience. I tried Thunderbird and various others but when you've had basically the same mail program i.e. Outlook Express/Winmail for so many years it can be very frustrating to lose your old friend.

Me and alot of others like the old Windows mail, its private and just better.

Actually, WLM is not "web based email". WLM is an email program just like Windows Mail or Outlook Express. Many email service providers provide access via your browser and also via an email program. It's up to you which method of access you use. If you choose to use WLM by optionally "signing in", your contacts and calendar will be duplicated at the live.com website however the email accounts will exist no differently than they do in Windows Mail. That said, I also prefer the simplicity of Windows Mail but I just find it safer to use WLM on Windows 7. To avoid some of the additional bugs and quirks in WLM 2011 I'm still using WLM 2009 but expect to switch to the 2011 version (with the ribbon) eventually.
