Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working March 1 2011: IE8 or 9? | NowPublic News Coverage

Internet Explorer Users Have Been Having Trouble With the Browser and For Many It Stopped Working March 1 2011

There appears to be some trouble with Internet Explorer today - messages are popping up all over the Internet about users getting a message on their screen saying:
"Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

There have been some suggestions to try installing IE9, rather than using IE8, but it is unclear if this will solve your problem.

You can also try resetting Internet Explorer, by taking the following steps:
Go to Start, then Control Panel. Click on Network and Internet, then open Internet Options, and the Advanced Tab, and click Reset.

You then have to "Delete personal settings" and then click on the Reset button.

I can't guarantee the advice, but it may be worth a try. :)

Have you installed any addons in the last day or 2? I've just tried my IE8 and it still works perfectly. I can't see how IE can stop working on a particular date unless it's due to a new addon or update.

When it says "stopped working" click on the View Details of it, or go to the Action Center- Maintenance-View Reliability History and click on where it mentions IE near the bottom with the icon, and click on or right-click "View Details" and post a screenshot of the details so we can see what the faulty module is.

I had this happen to me a few hours ago. Unfortunately IE was the only browser I had installed. Resetting IE did not work. I had to hijack a neighbors PC to download IE9 RC. I must admit IE9 is damn sexy.

I took them a few beers. Good trade. :)

Here's my Event Viewer Log.

Norton is not the piece of the puzzle.

Here's a quote from a user on whirlpool forums. User: RO85

"had 4 clients with this today, 3 were running windows 7 on fairly new machines. only 2 were running norton, the other win 7 machine was running avg free and the other xp machine was also running avg free.
I'll be expecting more calls tomorrow (thanks Mr Gates)."

"It seems that disabling all addons (via IE mode without addons) fixes the problem. Although i'm not sure what has caused it, i can only assume it was a windows update of some sort that was rolled out in the last few days."

Don't worry about the entries in the reliability history there. You don't need to get rid of them, not going to hurt anything. It's just a log of the times IE crashed.

You need to right click on one of the IE entries there like I mentioned in my earlier post, and click on "View Details" and post what that says.

I've seen this occur on 4 computers in the past 48 hours:
2 using Win 7 Home Prem 64bit,
1 using Win 7 Professional 32bit, and
1 using WinXP SP3.

It might be a coincidence but all 4 units had just updated Adobe Flash player. One occurred within minutes of doing the update. After the flash player update, opening Internet Explorer 8 (same browser on all three) gave the message "Internet Explorer has stopped working" and it then closed.

Some of the things we tried which didn't work: Disabling the flash player plug-in did not work; uninstalling flash player did not work; doing a system restore did not work; opening IE in Safe Mode didn't work.

Solution for IE8: Using the Internet Explorer "Reset" found on the Advanced tab in Internet Options took care of the issue. It did not require checking the "Delete personal settings" option. See: How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP (Method 1)

Hope that helps.

I find it quite odd, but maybe just a coincidence.

Around the same time as this started happening, Commonwealth Bank in Australia had a major computer glitch and their ATM's were spitting out free money to clients who were making withdraws. It didn't matter how much people were withdrawing, they were getting about $1,000 each.

Could it at all possibly be connected?

Oooh. Too bad my bank couldn't join in that, er, fun. ;-)

Still, I see a possible connection with the Flash update+IE.
