MS FixIt has hijacked my IE Internet Options

I wanted to reset IE to the default state, so I used FixIT from the friggin' Microsoft site. However, it locked my Internet Options so that I cannot change the home page.

Now, I have change the homepage anyway via the command:

    reg add "hkcu\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main" /v "Start Page" /t REG_SZ /d "Google" /f

However, I want to restore my control over the Internet options, which are still greyed out. See the attached graphic (the graphic is prior to my reg add above.) I have tried browsing settings via gpedit to see what MSFIXIT F'xd up but I don't see what controls this.

Some settings are managed by your system administrator.

"Some settings are managed by your system administrator."

Seems like this was a big problem in IE7 from some web browsing. At first I thought I had tried them all. There was one and only one that mattered. See the attached graphic. Set the HomePage value to 0 (zero) in HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel.

Amongst the worst evils are OEM software programs that try to fix things that were not broken. I will be loath to use Microsoft FIXIT for a while. Another fine example of Total Cost of Ownership.

Still trying to figure out why you needed to use MS FixIt rather than Internet Options > Advanced tab > Reset button. In any event you might want to run System File Checker from an elevated command prompt (option two in this tutorial) to see if MS FixIt messed up any system files.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
