White square with red cross

Have tried Google (very old posts) and a search but cannot understand what it came up with - looks like nothing so...

Friends computer Toshiba A420 with Vista SP1 web sites come up with white square windows with a small red cross in the top left hand corner.

What does this mean and how can I get rid of it for her?

It means that your browser is unable to display the image or media. Usually some plugin or other is missing, in some cases the target is missing. The whitesquare/red cross is a "placeholder" for the image or media.

If you right click on the white square, you can sometimes download the image to see what it is or choose "Show Picture".

Some ad- blockers will also cause this.

Some other info on place-holders;

The red X may indicate that your friend's Java applets are not loading where the images should be. Here is an article from Java that describes the problem and the solution. This particular article is slightly older, and refers to IE6, but it describes the problem well, and once you've diagnosed the problem on your system, you can check for the most recent solution: " Red X image displayed where the applet should be, applets won't run": Red X image displayed where the applet should be, applets won't run (You can find a plethora of additional help on Google if you research the key words in quotes.)

Hi all In my control panel, in the users section all the user's pictures appear as blank white squares. In the login screen I can see the pictures but I'm wondering why they appear as white squares in the control panel and if it is a bug which can be fixed. Thank you in advance Fela
