    IE 7 for Windows 7

    Hey guys! :)

I've been using W7 for a couple weeks now, (yes i'm a W7 newb) and wanted to know if it's possible to install IE 7 on W7?

I can't stand IE 8. Way to many compatiblity issues with the websites i go to. I really liked IE 7 in Vista, but this IE 8 just plain sucks to put it mildly

I'm a gamer, and i like to listen to music while i game. With IE 8 i can't do that, i use AOL Radio and every time i try to open a station with IE 8 i get that annoying popup IE has stopped working, windows is searching for solution (like that every works ). And there is no compatiblity option for that site.

    Welcome to Win7Forums kormath!

Hm...thats an iffy one. IE8 and its components are apart of Windows itself. I know you can uninstall IE from Windows and Features but the core components still remain from IE embedded into the system...if IE8 is giving you such a hassle...would another browser such as firefox or google chrome work for you?

If IE7 would try to install in Windows 7 it would try to overwrite those core components with old versions not supported. If setup doesn't stop you than there is bound to be bad things that would happen because of that

    Just a thought

Your right, I've tried a few different stand-alone installations of IE 7 and they all cancel for wrong OS or SP version.

I've been using Chrome. So far it works fine, except for the few games i have that require IE for updates. Luckily most update through torrents now :) I just hate that i can't have my MSN toolbar in Chrome for weather updates.

Hopefully they'll get all the bugs worked out of IE 8 soon. I've been really happy with IE 7, just seems wrong to have to use a different browser for the new windows now

    Uninstall IE8 first.

Did you unintall IE8 first before trying to install IE7?

Unlike prior Windows OS IE8 is NOT part of the OS & can now be removed!
To do this go to Control Panel, Then Uninstall a Program, then click on the side Turn Windows Features on or off, then uncheck the box next to IE8!
    Then follow the Windows instructions.
I'm not positive but I think you'll have to reboot after this.

Then after that use Vista Compatibility mode to install IE7. (Rightclick the installation package, then properties, then Compatibility) :)

Hope that helps & it works for ya...

Yes I understand that but core components of IE are built into the system...They are built into explorer.exe and other things...installing IE7 will overwrite these components with older versions more than likely not compatible with Windows 7...just take that as a warning...

Why don't you try using the Compatibility Add on in IE8 that can run older web pages built for IE7. Downgrading to IE7 can cause many issues and popular browsers like Youtube are phasing out support for IE7. If the Compatibility Add On doesn't work, then just use an alternate browser like Firefox 3.5.

Hope this works for you. Good luck.

sorry been out of touch for a while on vacation :)

I have used the compatibility option when it's available, it still doesn't work on a lot of websites yet i frequent.

I did uninstall IE8 previous to trying to install IE7, i had 2 different stand alone installations for IE7 i tried. First one said wrong OS, 2nd said it was the wrong SP version.

Thanks for your tips :) i'll just have to suffer and use chrome until they get all the kinks worked out of IE8.
