The article gives 4 ways to approach the problem:

In regard to the first, Disable Protected Mode, I tend to be pretty cautious too, so I would try the other 3 methods first. If none of them help with the problem, and you wanted to try to Disable Protected Mode, then you might
re-enable Protected Mode as soon as you re-boot your system. I think that would pretty much minimize any potential risk ---
If you haven't already done so, there are quite a few additional suggestions in the 'Comments' section below the article.
Also, check your Add-Ons, becaue very often one or more of them could be causing the problem. Also conflicts with other apps --- because many apps are not configured to work with IE9.
