So, I have Microsoft Outlook 2010 on this computer, and I'm using it with Gmail. The desktop notifications for new mail never show up -- is this a common problem?

Correct.
The workaround for this is to create a rule within outlook for all mail(for the specified email account) and then in the advanced options for the rule you can specify "display a desktop alert" and "play a sound."

outlook does tell you when a new email shows up in a sub folder thru somthing like this: (5) for example.
i would like to see the new email notifications also in the sub folders! if i get mail i a sub forlder nothing shows if the folders are collapsed :(

I receive notification sound on first message receipt, but not second, third... unless about ten minutes passes. Then the notification sound will come through, and the cycle will start again. During the no notification sound cycle, other system sounds work fine.
Any Ideas?
