Not sure what happened, but starting this afternoon, Explorer 9 (released version via automatic update) will not open a link in a new tab, nor will it open that line into a new explorer window.

Looked at multiple complaints and fixes for this, none worked (including the scripts).

What happened today: recent automatic windows 7 update to "allow further updates", I used firefox for the first time - note did not set it as the default, there was a java update and an adobe update.

This machine is windows 7 sp1, completely updated 64bit home premium system.

Turned off all the add ons, restarted - didn't fix it. Tried the script for the same problem, that didn't work. All the resetting has done, is removed the tool bars I like to use :( and it still doesn't work.

Would like to leave explorer 9 as the default, but this is driving me nuts. (already can't use it for some sites due to the way their developers coded page popups - use safari for those)

the new tab is blank, and it just flat out will not open a new window.

If I right mouse copy the short cut and paste it in, it works fine

Hi ltree13.
Welcome to Seven Forums

I'm note sure if this is exactly what you are looking for but are you referring to the CTRL and Shift options?

e.g.
hold CTRL when clicking a link opens in a new tab.
hold Shift when clicking a link opens in a new window.

Is that what you are referring too?

Regards,
JDobbsy1987

No, for example go to google news, then mouse click an article, normally this would open this link in a new tab.
Now i just get a blank stuck tab, that is unueable until I select the home location.

Also not working, if I right mouse button the html link for new window, I get nothing

Have you tried the below found here - You cannot open a new Internet Explorer window or nothing occurs after you click a link

  1. Quit all programs that are running.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
  4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):

  • Shdocvw.dll
  • Actxprxy.dll
  • Oleaut32.dll
  • Mshtml.dll
  • Browseui.dll
  • Shell32.dllShell32.dll

rolled back the system to a previous restore point (5/11/2011) which fixed the problem. This removed an adobe update, java update, and independently removed the google toolbar (which had been on the window for months without issue), though it managed to leave the bing tool bar - which is a very recent addition :) . It did not remove the latest windows 7 update, which fell on 5/16 (which had warned on install that it could not be removed). Some values were changed in the registry.

Of course now I wish I'd captured the registry files to see which ones were the problem.

Wish I'd captured the registry/dlls before the roll back. Leading candidate is either java or mozilla, but since I have a known restore point, if it happens again I might be able duplicate the cause or at least flag the differences.

One other tidbit, I did load a bunch of old files from an old drive that had been retired. Norton was run immediately after the download and found Trogan.Wimad (install.xxxtoolbar.com), although the infected file was never opened.

I now have this problem exactly as described. For some reason I can not find a restore point before the problem started. I can't open new tabs, new windows or java (open application) which allows a new window to open.
My web experince has gone to $h!+, and I can't get into my banking website.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello nizpro and welcome to Seven Forums.

Have you tried basic housekeeping chores like deleting temp files, history, browser cache, etc? Although you didn't say I'm guessing you're using IE9. Did you try running it without add-ons? Also, have you tried the suggestions in post # 6?

Though explorer 9 (fully updated) has continued to work after the rollback (and through) several automatic updates, java has never been the same since.

and by the way, I did try all the house cleaning stuff and more, it wasn't till I went to a previous restore that the functionality came back in internet explorer, though the java installation was left crippled.

:mad:Yeh I did the disable addon thing. I deleted all temp files and upgraded to IE9 because the issue started in 8. I'm leaning toward an Adobe flash player upgrade as the culprit but can't be sure. after it started windows did an update and my pc won't let me restore before the issue. I hope I'm not stuck with it.

"The module 'shdocvw.dll' was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that 'shdocvw.dll' is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again." (same for all in list)
I would have attached a pic of the msg but the magage attachments link won't work for me due to this issue

You could try uninstalling Adobe Flash temporarily. Best if you use their uninstaller.

Uninstall Flash Player | Windows

After removal, try running System File Checker scan. If any problems are noted run it 3-4 times and post back the results.
