I use this for firefox:
Firefox Spell and Grammar Checker

But i always use Opera (which has an awesome spell check) as my main browser so not really used the other too much

What about this:

Remove that add-on i just suggested and then do the following

1. In the address bar of Firefox, type about:config
2. Type layout.spellcheckDefault in the filter box
3. Change the value from 1 to 2

Is this a little better ?

it is a built in spell checker

layout.spellcheckDefault - Value 1 = Disabled (default)
layout.spellcheckDefault - Value 2 = Enabled

Setting it to 2 work perfect for me
