IE9 problem, clicking link opens in 2 places

Hi, wondering if anybody can help me. I've been trying on my own playing around with the settings as well as looking for anything online but can't figure this out.
When i'm in my ie9 browser and on a page with a link i wish to open. I click on it and a new tab or window will open from that link.. which is fine. But my current window also goes to the link so i have both on the same page. i don't want the first page i was on to go to the link as well. I can't figure out how to stop this from happening.
