Search not able to index contents of Windows Live Mail

Wondering if anyone else has had this issue...

System was an upgrade from Vista 64 to Windows 7 64. Everything seems to be working great -- except...

Windows Live Mail contents are not being indexed by Windows Search. In troubleshooting, I found in the Advanced Options for Indexing, File Types of "eml", it reports that "Registered IFilter is not found".

Anyone else have any idea how to fix -- anyone else experiencing the same problem?

Thanks

Hi, VinnyL, and welcome to the forums.

Did you have Search 4.0 installed in Vista?

If so you might need to reinstall it....

I'm having one hell of a time trying to figure out what version is installed... 4.0 was installed prior to the upgrade and I would assume (and that does you make an a** out of you and me) that Windows 7 Beta would have the latest version. Is that not the case?

It may *not8 Have it installed, as Search 4.0 was installed via Windows Update, whereas I am pretty positive it is *not* in Windows 7 by default,....that leads me to beleive thathte search 4.0 is not actualy working....

So, attempts to install Search 4.0 failed... Chances are something did get messed up somewhere with the upgrade but trying to fix be reinstalling is a no go.

Can anyone else advise if they get the same message for .eml file types?

Thanks
Vinny

Known issue

This issue affects the 64-bit editions of Windows 7.
The contents of Windows Live Mail (.eml) and newsgroup (.nws) messages are not indexed and cannot be searched from the Start menu, the Windows Explorer search box, or the Windows Live Mail application. The issue affects .eml and .nws content exported from other applications as well.
To avoid this issue, either search for message fields such as Subject, From, To, and Date Received or manually register the search filter.
To manually register the filter
  1. Using Regedit.exe, navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml\PersistentHandler and assign the Default value to {5645C8C1-E277-11CF-8FDA-00AA00A14F93}.
  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Advanced.
  3. Click Indexing Options, and then click Advanced.
  4. Click Rebuild. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to rebuild the index, click OK. The rebuilding operation may take some time.

So this solution worked great for the Beta... However, it seems something is now amiss with the RC version. I tired updating to the same key and it doesn't work. Search reports there is no iFilter again... Anyone get this to work on the 64 bit version?

Thanks

Yes, it works for me.
I did the regedit for both eml and nws.
Took a while to rebuild the index, but it works now.
I can search within sent newsgroup messages.

So thanks for the last post... the proper iFilter is now there but unfortunately the mail is still not getting indexed. I checked the settings for folders being indexed and what I thought was interesting was that AppData (Where I think mail is stored) is explicitly excluded. Is this happening to anyone else? Does that seem right?
