tried waterfox and screwed up my firefox

Hello you all!

Last night my curiosity took the better of me so I tried the waterfox browser,
just wanted to check it out. It installed into a different folder "waterfox SE or Le"
or something like that. Well, I tried to start it and it crashed on me before it even
started so I thought oh well I will wait because I have an excellent firefox 6 filled with great stuff and very customized. So I didn't want to risk that one.

So I simply uninstalled it and started my firefox 6 .. man!!
everything was gone !!

Crap, I have tried to start it with the -profilemanager
and I've tried the mozbackup to try to recover it but no luck so far

when typing %appdata%
and selecting the Mozilla folder (it's over 400 mb)
so I guess some or hopefully all data is still there but
I'm not sure.

I even tried recuva but didn't know what to restore.

I should say, I have not been working on my computer since
this happened last night in terms of writing things on my harddrive or install
/ uninstall stuff.

But for now I'm stucked

if anyone could be so kind to help me I would be very grateful

You could try a system restore to before you installed waterfox - System Restore

I tried to do a system restore, but it didn't help after rebooting I couldn't start firefox at all. When I clicked I could see the process for maybe 1.5 sec in the taskmanager and then it was gone. Tried several times and waited a while to see if it did come back.

So I went into the systemrestore and selected the option to undo what it just did,
and then when I came back to the computer there was a message on the screen
about the restorepoint didn't complete successfully and it couldn't reverse it.

Well bummer, but since it was just from yesterday I figured it was status quo anyway,
but I still cannot start firefox at all ...

copied the mozilla folder from %appdata%
and then uninstalled firefox from my system, and as of now I have downloaded the firefox 6 and I'm just about to install it, and then I hope that I somehow can import the stuff from the %appdata%mozilla directory somehow but I really don't know how to go about that.

any help is greatly appreciated

I dont think just replacing the files from AppData will work even more so now its a new version of firefox. Keep hold of that though someone else may know better. I think you may have to just grin and bear it and start from scratch unless you have a recent system image you can revert back to.

Sometimes all one need to do is to calm down and start from scratch,
take it slow and keep the eyes opened.

Well at least that's what I need to do sometime, so here's what I did.

After the last posting I downloaded firefox 6 and installed it, that worked pretty much
as expected but my settings where no where to be found

Well I started to check into that %appdata%mozilla folder that I had copied to
a safe location. sure enough, there where like 6 different profiles with ridiculous
names and one of those was around 250mb or so so I knew it has to contain alot
more than the default profile.

I found a "profile.ini"
opened it up and made it point to that cryptic name profile directory

and Baaaaammmmm !!!!!.. :) there it was I got the complete kit back,
every little thing from skin to plugins etc ..

so I'm a happy camper and I wanted to share the solution, in case someone
else got similar problems. It was like, I couldn't see the forest cause of the trees
where in my way

Good news Ken wasn't sure that would work so I've learnt something new to.

• Waterfox uses the same profile Firefox does. It should be obvious the first time you run Waterfox and see that the interface/bookmarks/history has all remained the same.

Well it might be obvious if it starts but if you read my first posting you'll see that it didn't start at all crashed before anything visible turned up on the screen

• When you uninstalled Waterfox, if the 'remove preferences/user data' boxed is ticked, then it will remove the profile that both Waterfox and Firefox use, which again should be made obvious from what I said above.

Not very obvious when you have installed it in a totally different location, and also
being a Beta or RC or final release it's at least another flavour of the program you would think it would allow you to run it alongside with you default browser.

• You are the first person I've heard of who has had a problem with Waterfox crashing on the first run. Did Waterfox really crash or did you get an error message?

Yes it did crash! and like I said even before anything visible turned up on my screen -- And I guess someone has to be the first one

Anyway, this is just a post to clear up any confusion ..

But it's a good thing that you cleared the confusion about where
the waterfox store it's profiles.
