Why can't you download IE9 from the Microsoft site?

try netscape old but works like a dream

I use IE on windows exclusively and never seen it crash. BUT with the hardware acelleration features, there is a lot more door of opportunity for this kind of thing than before.

A buggy video driver might be causing it.

You can click the gear icon on the top left, then Internet Options, then Advanced and the very top checkbox says "Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering" and see if the crashing stops. If it does then you know what the problem is. Can try updating video drivers or just leave it that way.

IE8 is working good for me. I'm hesistant to move to IE9. I know there are improvements but I'm in a good spot and hate to spoil things by making a change.

I never really liked FF. Chrome was OK but I'm a MS person through and through (for better or worse). IE8 is my only installed browser at this time. I do have the Chrome installation file downloaded in case I lose IE access, which is entirely possible.
