Windows Live Mail 2011 New Message window Check Names

What does the Check Names button on the New Message ribbon do? There is a check as part of the icon but clicking the icon changes or accomplishes nothing.

Not sure about 2011 or the ribbon but in the 2009 version the "check names" box pops up when you try to send the new message if the format of the name is incorrect. There is also a "check names" button that normally doesn't do anything unless you have entered an incorrect or incomplete email address. In that case it will automatically pick an address from your address book that looks like a close match if one exists.

roncerr--Thanks for the response. Using WLM 2011 the Check Names icon (with check mark) seems a permanent part of the New Message window's ribbon. It is there right from the start when I open that window, before entering any email address.
I suspect its purpose is along the lines you suggest, but I feel I have entered addresses that are not in my Contacts list (or erroneous versions of ones that are in the Contacts list) and nothing happened. I have never seen the Check Names window that, from Googling, I see can occur. I do not want to see it, since I understand when it appears and you click it off, WML will not permit the email address to be used.

That's a good thing since it avoids your using an invalid address format that won't work anyway. It also lets you take a shortcut by just typing in a partial address and it tries to match it up with something in your address book. If yours is not working right, I'd do a repair of Windows Live Essentials via Programs and Features.

    roncerr--Again thanks.
I suppose it is a matter of preference. A friend was trying to email someone who is not in the Contact list. Check Names opened the Check Names window. Closing the window wiped the email address from the To line. That is not "a good thing".
I can see that Check Names has some use when an email address is similar to but not exactly what is in the Contact list and therefore probably in error. But there is no way Check Names can determine that a new address is in error --just because it is not in the Contact list.
Is there some way to turn Check Names off? I guess that is really what I should have asked in the first place. Sorry.

It should never 'wipe' a valid address; my guess is that your friend had actually typed an address that was not in the right format and would not have worked anyway. So no, your question should be how can I repair WLM so that it never 'wipes' a valid address. Check Names is not the problem but the way it seems to behave in your friend's case is.

After Googling the issue I did come across one Newsgroup Post that may provide a clue: "Sorry, I do not know why this is happening. The only thing I can think of is that a setting not native to WLMail came across if you migrated from Outlook Express (either by installing on a machine that had OE or by using some wizardry to move your settings from OE)." http://www.eggheadcafe.com/microsoft...eck-names.aspx
