I've tried using Hotmail on the web, from Thunderbird, from my iPhone, and can't retrieve any email. Annoying because i need to conform an account via email.

Hotmail uses a web-based protocol different from pop3 or imap. So your best bet is to use the web interface directly or have Hotmail forward all your mail to some other account that provides pop3 or imap access that works with Thunderbird. Or you could use Windows Live Mail (the program) instead of Thunderbird to retrieve all your mail since WLM can access Hotmail directly in addition to the normal pop3 and imap.
