Just to make sure we are talking about the right address book: Windows Live Mail has an icon called "contacts" (not called address book). Windows 7 (Explorer View) also has a "contacts" folder under <username>/Contacts, however that contacts folder is not used by WLM. So the only contacts list that works with WLM is the one you access within WLM. If it's empty you need to import contacts into it from whatever list your contacts are in currently. But first you need to decide whether you want Microsoft to keep an updated contacts list on their server at the website "contacts.live.com". That's because WLM actually can use one of two contact lists: your "signed-in" contacts list and your "not signed-in" contact list. You will see one or the other depending upon wherther or not you "sign-in" to WLM.

Try editing one of the contacts and make sure the field called "Personal email" is filled in with an address of the correct format xxx@yyy.com.
