Veiw downloads is all that shows when Internet Explorer 9 starts

When i start Internet Explorer 9 (O/S windows 7 ultimate 64bit) it opens for a split second then closes leaving the veiw downloads screen up, with the homepage in it as if i have tried to download the page.

any help would be appreciated as it leaves me without internet explorer

if i open IE9 via run: iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff then a blank internet explorer opens. But when i type a page into the address bar explorer closes and all that shows is the downloaded screen with the pages i have tried to access in. Have tried reinstalling Internet explorer, resetting to defaults, disabling addons etc.

It sounds like your default action form HTM is to download, rather than open.
Check the registry in regedit - navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \.html and make sure that the String (Default) value of the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \.html" key is "htmlfile"

Then go to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile and make sure that the 'shell' Key is set to 'opennew'
and that the opennew\command key default is set to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" %1

if anyting is adrift, export the whole htmlfile key, and save as a text file - attach it to your response

Looks like it's the .html Key that up the swannee.

Create a new System Restore point
Export the .html key again, this time as a reg file
(that way if I screw this up you have a chance of getting it back to current state)

Download the html.txt file from here https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=93673...8FCEB92F%21115, and save it somewhere accessible
rename the file to "html.reg"
then right-click on it, and select Merge from the options - you should get a success message.
Reboot, and try IE again.
The we need to get to the difficult stuff!

OK - export teh Key for
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \.htm
as well - attach that to your reponse. It may have gone the same way.
Have you been using a Registry cleaner of some kind? Had malware??

Yeh, had a virus a couple of months ago. Used malwarebytes to remove it and worked fine for a good few weeks after that.

Yes, the htm association has been broken as well - In view of your malware issues, I think is may be best to try a System Resote back to a time when the system (and IE particularly) was working properly, so long as that's not a time when it was also infected.

You may want to try resetting IE back to default, by using the option in Internet Options > Advanced > Reset first.
Other than that, you may get some joy by uninstalling IE9, then using that option again, then reinstalling IE9.

Ok i cant restore my system back to a point that is earlier than the issue as all my restore points are after the problem started. Ive also tried reinstalling internet explorer to no avail. But i have realised ive omitted a vital piece of information. Along with the homepage, another file is trying to download, one called 'navcancl'. any ideas?
