Unable to scroll using arrow keys, pg down, home ect on browsers

Sorry if this has been posted before, I did a search and I couldn't find anything. I have a one year old Acer Aspire 5742 laptop, and for the last few months I have been unable to scroll using the arrow keys. The page down brings me to the very bottom of the page or to the next link, instead of the usual one screen-length down, and the home and page up buttons do not work. I caught my 2 year old pressing buttons, could she have hit something to cause this to happen? When I am viewing a picture on a browser (on FaceBook, whatever) or clicking wherever on a page, I get the text cursor. Can anyone think of anything that would cause this?

Sounds like a stuck key (Ctrl maybe). Also check Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center\Make the keyboard easier to use, see if anything got turned on there.

I can use the up/down/home/end/pg up/pg down keys now, nothing was turned on though. Ctrl seems to be ok, still getting the text cursor on everything though.

    Welcome to Seven Forums Kate888!

What I'm guessing you left out is that this only occurs in Internet Explorer.

    • "Caret Browsing" is on.

If this is the case select the following from the IE menu (if the menu is not visible: click in the internet window somewhere blank, so your cursor is blinking in the IE window. Then press the ALT key):

    Tools >> Internet Options

    Click on the Advanced tab

In the list, Under the Accessibility Heading find the checkbox labeled "Enable Caret Browsing for New Browsers and Tabs" and make sure it is unchecked.

Click [OK] button at the bottom of Internet Options.

Has the problem resolved? Great, your done...

If not press "F7" to toggle Caret browsing mode for the current window to off

Does this solve the problem? Wonderful, done!

(NOTE: You may have to restart your browser if the aforementioned checkbox was checked, and you unchecked it)

If you would, please post the results back here whether it works or not.

    Thanks,
    Mike :)

Hey sorry for the late response, Christmas baking is keeping me away from the computer :) I actually only use Firefox, although this did fix it in IE. I did a search for Caret browsing for Firefox and couldn't find anything. First time I heard of Caret so bear with me :). I am fully updated, full virus scan done, reboots and all, and still nothing. Last night my daughter changed something else-changed the taskbar/start menu to the old XP version, although looking closely, it reminds me more of 95/2000. I checked every possible option and am unable to find it. I can customize it but no choice from XP to Windows 7. I tried a simple sys restore and it failed, said my hard drive was corrupted?? What's next...any advice, besides keeping her away from it, (she's VERY smart for 2!!:)) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!

    Hello Kate!

Yeah, be sure and make backups, restore disc's (if you didn't but the retail version of windows 7) and keep system restore going, because you'll never be able to keep those little fingers from touching something :) - and it's always easier to have it ready to replace! You say the system restore point you tried to use produced an error, thats not a good thing. Have you had other anti-virus software installed in the past and subsequently uninstalled it possibly? That could be one possible source of the error. Did it produce an error code # or anything tangible for me to be able to help track down the problem. You should have more restore points available, and I guess it is possible that the one had a issue. Also what anti-virus software are you using now.

And as far as the Caret Browsing, It's a feature so you can use the keyboard to jump to different parts of the web page (links and forms, etc.) to be able to navigate without the luxury of a mouse, although in your case it you don't need it, and I find it strange that it WAS turned on in IE, so it seems like was right about the cause, but then you say your "primary browser" Mozilla FF is still acting that way, and while I'd bet it has a similar functionality, I don't know how they would both get turned one at once!? I don't have Mozilla in front of me now, but If this doesn't help, I'll try to get that answer for you. First make sure it's not an Accessibility feature:

To enter the Ease of Access Center:
You should be able to simply press then in the search-box type "Ease" and press enter. Most of the way down the window there should be a link titled Make the keyboard earlier to use. Click on it, and the next window should have a bunch of check-boxes. make sure they are all unchecked. This features can cause some people all kinds of problems, and may be the source. Click [OK] and see if it helps at all.

Try that and let me know if there's any change. Otherwise (1) remember to answer the anti-virus question(s). (2) confirm that IE is working fine while Mozilla FF is still acting the way you mentioned before.

Hope to hear back from you soon, good luck!
    Mike

Addition: Actually I checked out Foxfire and in the newest version I just downloaded (hopefully the same in what you've got, or else you might want to upgrade anyway) I used the Alt key to bring up the menu, if it isn't already visible, then opened the Tools menu and selected Options from the bottom. The Options window has a row of images/Icons across the top of the screen, with the right-most looking like a gear and titled Advanced. Click This to bring up the Advanced options, which should consist of four tabs. The first one titles General SHOULD already be selected (if not click it to open it). The top section of the tab should be titled Accessibility with three (3) check boxes inside this area. The First one should be titled "Always use the cursor keys to navigate within the pages" Make sure that this item is NOT checked. It is basically the equivalent of Carat Browsing in Internet Explorer. Make sure if you do make any changes (check/unchecked boxes) that you press [OK] at the bottom of the window (as cancel will void any changes made). It should take effect immediately, although restarting the browser is always advisable to be certain.

THAT'S IT!!! "Always use the cursor keys to navigate within the pages" WAS checked. The problem is fixed!!! Thank you so much!!! For your other questions, I have always used Avast Antivirus, which is updated, and I now have 3 restore points. Just tried a restore from the newest point and still corrupted. I am not getting an error code, it just says "Windows has detected a file system error on Acer (C). You must check the disc for errors before it can be restored". Tried to check and it won't because the drive is in use. I'm considering a wipe but not really the best idea because I don't want to lose my games (Sims nerd here). The corrupted file is bothering me, but not enough to lose all my data. I have a 1TB external hd, but what's the point of restoring a corrupted file onto a clean hd? Gahhh...

Thanks for all the help Mike, greatly appreciated as always!

    Hello Kate,

Thats Wonderful! Glad I could help! You might want to stick around here at Seven forums and see some of the excellent tutorials to continue troubleshooting your error. One place you might start is with this SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker - Windows 7 Forums. To check your system for errors in files. Also scanning your harddrive might be a good idea, if you haven't already tried. The best way to figure out the source of a problem like this would probably be to check the Event Error Log and look around the time that the last time the error occurred for unusual messages or Events tagged with "Critical" or "Error" flags. This is all something we could help you with.

In the Start menu type "eventvwr"
    Click Windows Logs >> Application
Then System >>in the left-hand side of the screen
Look for the aforementioned errors that relate to the trouble you are having.

If you do find anything, any event IDs and source codes along with a description might be helpful.

I'm just glad you can get back on the internet. And use your computer somewhat normally again!

    Congratulations!
    Mike

More than I thought, there is quite a few of each one, lets say 200+. Sorry for the long post, figured it was better copying than typing out each one. Let me know if you can think of anything :)

How many computer do you have hooked up to your network? I'm guessing that NetBIOS error was just weird?! because unless you've been using several subnets or something, it's either a "netBIOS thing" that is outside of my area of knowledge or the computer it's referencing is outside of the "default subnet range" But since that's not your problem right now, let's leave that alone - at least for now anyway!

First off, assuming you wrote your "WHOLE" Model number, and there is not a "Z", "G" or "ZG" missing after the 5742 portion then here is a link to: Acer's Downloads & Support Documents - Aspire / Aspire 5742 In case you need any drivers, this is the best place to get them rather than Windows Update. They are designed for you model specifically when you get the from your manufacturer's site. Although I don't know if you NEED any for sure. And, I'd avoid the BIOS flash unless it's either your only real option, or someone "in the know" recommends it, and I'd still not go on that alone. (But I do see the error.) I just happened to have the link from a day ago, so maybe it'll be useful/maybe not, you can just bookmark it for now if you like.

it just says "Windows has detected a file system error on Acer (C). You must check the disc for errors before it can be restored". Tried to check and it won't because the drive is in use.
That may mean it was flagged "dirty" and needs to be scanned before it can safely let you use system restore? Or else it's just finding errors, either way to get it to scan the drive (and fix any problems) you'll have to do a scan that runs when the system boots up, BEFORE windows system files start opening and executing. Here are the main two ways to do this using CHKDSK, which works on NTFS drives just fine: How to Run Disk Check in Windows 7 You should also check the Iomega drive, It may be just some minor corruption or problem with an index that could just get worse, depending on what caused it and what you do with the drive. You should be able to scan the Iomega External "NON-SYSTEM" drive without requiring a reboot. And afterwords it should generate a report you can scroll through to read the results and see if it fixed anything. The System Drive may be easy enough to read during the boot to notice any errors, although the tutorial should explain where to locate the log if necessary.

The System File Checker (SFC) I mentioned above should try to fix any system files that it can from backed up copies it makes (separate from any back-up you may or may not have made) and it should tell you if it did or didn't find errors and if they were fixable at the elevated command line, after entering the command. The tutorial is linked to above in Post #8 as "SFC /SCANNOW...etc." And just need run on the C: drive, not the Iomega.

If neither of these produce anything, which I doubt will be the case, you should try running the free downloadable application: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanner (Fully Update it first, and then run a "Full Scan").

If that still doesn't help, it may be your Avast software possibly. I know some of these type of apps have been known to "lock" system restore point images, so that a virus can't use this feature to it's advantage and reinstall itself using the same mechanism used to reinstall system files/settings. But I don't know much about how to treat it, besides removing the a/v software correctly (using the vender's site's tool and steps they outline for removal rather than using Window's Control Panel's Un/Install Programs procedure used for everything else!)

This shouldn't be much of a problem if you use the free version, as you can always reinstall it. Although you may want to test System Restore first, you should reinstall the same type or another type of anti-virus software at some point. (Free is fine: Avast, Avira or Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) are probably your best bet for free ones in general.

I'd probably at least try to scan the system files and check both Hard Drives (Ext. & Int.) and MBAM is a great malware scanner to use "on-demand" if you don't already have it, I'd do that as well. It's up to you on the a/v software.

    Mike:)
