Windows 7: IE8 Generates Application Error before opening

IE8 Generates Application Error before opening

Suddenly this morning IE8 has started crashing on opening, whether opening it directly from the Start Menu or using a saved bookmark. The "Internet Explorer has stopped working" box comes up, I click "Close Program", an Application Error box then appears with "Application Error: Exception EAccessViolation in module ShellEh428.dll at 00008A08". I click "OK" to close that, and then IE8 proceeds to open and display normally. Then, within the same session, the same sequence of errors outlined above occur each time I click a link or try to open a new blank tab, etc. but IE8 doesn't actually close after clicking through the error boxes.

Another "new thing" is when I use File > Send > Shortcut to desktop I now get a confirmation box I have to click in order for the shortcut to save, which I never had to do before. I tried resetting my IE settings to default which didn't help.

The only thing that's changed on my system is a Windows update for Defender that installed this morning. I used 2 different restore points to go back a day or so and it didn't make a difference.
