Windows Live Mail ....

.... takes the incoming message sound from my desktop mail program - Thunderbird - is there any way to make the 2 apps play a different sound?

It sounds like both programs are using the windows default "New Mail Notification" sound as set in the control panel sound settings. You can change the sound there but then it will change for both programs. Any program that plays that stock sound will sound the same.

Live mail probably has no extra settings for mail notification sounds but Thunderbird seems to:

Of course....

....I knew that I could change the default sound in Thunderbird but obviously wasn't thinking clearly. If I change the default system sound then Live Mail should use that and T'bird the other.
