Any idea when it exactly started? See your windows update history when last updates did install succesfully (except the ones you did manually). Is that a long time ago? And what did you install or do prior to failure?

Oh, wait, actually, I just remebered, I re-installed windows because it was getting slow, and since I re-installed I haven't been able to update. So I can't have SP1 in that case, that was on a different instance of windows. So I don't think I have ever been able to access it on this instance.

view windows update history to be very sure it never did install updates automatically.

Also take a look at your system properties. Does it say Service Pack 1?
