Stop email from going into Storage folders in Windows Live Mail

Just upgraded to Windowss 7 with Windows Live Mail, used Windows Easy Transfer to move from machine running Outlook Express. All of my accounts, folders, and message rules were imported just fine, but I cannot change message rules to filter new incoming emails to go into the correct folders - everything goes into the Storage Folders which is totally frustrating :-( If I try to edit a message rule the "OK" button is ghosted. Surely there must be some way to get emails to go into the correct account folders?

Are you accessing your mail with POP or IMAP?

These are all pop3 accounts, not IMAP. I did find out something new. *If I create a completely new folder under each account and a new rule to filter email to that account into the new folder the filtering does work.* The folders and rules imported from Outlook Express didn't work in Windows Live Mail. I could not delete or edit the imported folders, and I could not change the imported message rules.

It might have been simpler to just export your messages as in my pdf, then let WLM put them in the correct folders. Export & Import Messages in WLM.pdf

I'm sure you are right. However, I used Windows Easy Transfer and was surprised to find that it moved everything - mailboxes, folders, accounts, rules - which didn't all work as expected in Windows Live Mail. Thanks for the tip. I'm sure it will help someone else.

Whenever messages are imported into WLM they go into storage folders because WLM has a separate set of mail boxes for each account you either have set up or will set up in the future. So the program has no way of knowing with which account messages should be associated. You must drag and drop your old messages to the account you want them associated with or you can keep all old and new messages in the storage area. (Of course, you may want to reorganize things so there is no longer an "Imported Messages" folder.)

Message rules apply to what happens to new mail downloaded from the server, which would normally go in to one of the Account Inboxes. At the time of download from server the Messsage rules for that Inbox will move the new message to the appropriate location according to the rules.
