| Windows 7: Is Windows Live Mail as much of a PIA as I've been reading? |

Is Windows Live Mail as much of a PIA as I've been reading? I didn't really want to go with Live but can't seem to accomplish the tutorial 'Enable WindowsMail in Windows 7' and am getting desperate for an email program. I did post to the tutorial discussion but haven't seen any reply.
I tried Thunderbird, didn't care for it, & now using Eudora 7 but don't really care for it either. I'm looking for something as close as possible to Outlook Express.
Thank you,

I use WLM and have no problem with it.
You can also use most other e-mail accounts with it too. Windows Live Mail - Set up Hotmail, Yahoo!, GMail, AOL e-mail
To be honest, you're always likely to get a better response with your own thread rather than add to the tutorial discussion, although that's not to say you shouldn't. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Pavilion Elite 495UK OS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-Bit CPU Intel Core i7 870 @ 2.93GHz Motherboard MSI 2A9C (CPU1) Memory 8Gb Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 664MHz Graphics Card nVidia GeForce GTX 460 1024MB dedicated RAM Sound Card Realtek HD Audio Monitor(s) Displays HP2310i Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 Keyboard Logitech K750 solar-powered keyboard Mouse Logitech Wireless M180 mouse PSU 460W Case HP Elite Cooling Air cooled Hard Drives 1x1954GB Hitachi HDS22020ALA 330 (RAID), 1x1954GB Hitachi External for backup and storage Internet Speed 2Mb Other Info Pure Avanti Flow Internet Radio with iPod Dock, 64Gb iPod, HP USB Speakers, Sony MDR-V500 Headphones, Sony Vaio F-Series Laptop |

Thanks. I understand the reasoning about better response to my own thread but where my question was concerning the tutorial, where would I start my own?
Are you using the newest LiveMail or an older one? I've read several times that people are having better luck with 2009 rather than 2011. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number emachines OS Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 7601 Multiprocessor Free Service Pack 1 CPU AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 220 Processor Motherboard eMachines EL1358G Memory 3.00 GB Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Screen Resolution 1280 x 1024 x 32 bits (4294967296 colors) @ 60 Hz Keyboard came with PC Mouse came with PC Hard Drives (1) WDC WD10 EADX-22TDHB0 SCSI Disk Device (2) Generic- Multi-Card USB Device Antivirus Avast Browser IE 9 Other Info don't know how to get info for the other 5 areas |

I'm using Windows Live Esentials 2011 and like I said, I've had no problems with it.

If I do end up having to settle for LiveMail do I have to take 'all' the Live stuff or is there just an email part? | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number emachines OS Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 7601 Multiprocessor Free Service Pack 1 CPU AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 220 Processor Motherboard eMachines EL1358G Memory 3.00 GB Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Screen Resolution 1280 x 1024 x 32 bits (4294967296 colors) @ 60 Hz Keyboard came with PC Mouse came with PC Hard Drives (1) WDC WD10 EADX-22TDHB0 SCSI Disk Device (2) Generic- Multi-Card USB Device Antivirus Avast Browser IE 9 Other Info don't know how to get info for the other 5 areas |

Hi grits,
WLM is an excellent program if used correctly. This is how I manage mine.
I have a Hotmail account, it stores all my contacts, I also keep a copy in .csv format. It is ONLY used to sign-in to Window Live Mail. Once the folders for it have been added, it gives me Safe/Blocked senders filtering. I then add my Gmail account & delete the Hotmail account. Everything still works as previously stated.
My Gmail account is set to archive messages once they are accessed using POP3, so I NEVER lose any messages unless I delete them.
If my current Hotmail account gets hacked, all I need to do is open a new account, import my contacts and be back to normal in minutes. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Look in my Signature. OS Win7 H.Prem. 32bit+SP1 |

Grits,
WL Mail is fine. I'm just an old geek trying to figure things out. I don't like the fact that WL talks to servers as regularly as it does (twice a day), but I think this is just a hang-over from their transition date - at least I hope it is. The only other thing I would guess is that MS is moving to the cloud computing model and that means clients have to check in with servers. As I said, I'm an old geek - been there done that.... centralized computing, decentralized computing, time-sharing..... same thing different name
You'll have to play around a little to find where they stuffed options, configuration and what-not. That's the price we pay for progress. It's a fair price, methinks.
The GUID folders created in AppData\Local cause no problems - they just bug me. They belong in either the app's folder or in a temp folder. But they pose no threat and they don't consume resources - well a little - they do exist, but they're empty.
So, go ahead - bite the bullet and go with Live Mail. It does have some neat features, and it has that damn ribbon that I really don't like. But then so do many other "modern" applications. I did pretty much the same as you. Didn't like it, re-instated WinMail, and then reinstalled Live Mail.
Dag nab it - that's progress for ya.
