I have always had this problem on all browsers, like explain earlier it has to do with advertisiments on certain sites.

Ie 9 issues with back button working intermittently

I had this problem with IE 9 also , I found out something that everyone should be interested in. Microsoft inherently lets around 30 websites track your moves and in the process it makes IE react very slow when going to a website and or using back and forward buttons........
This worked for me and others!
    1) Go to Internet options and delete browser history for good measure.....
    2) Go to Manage Add Ons and click Tracking Protection
    3) You will see Your Personalized List ...Right click and enable it!
    4) Double click Your Personalized List and another window pops up and click Automatically Block and click Ok.
    5) Now go check your IE........

This is not a MS issue but often tracking cookies, which allow you to opt out en masse here: Opt Out of Network Advertising

It can also be add-ons to your browser so check that only Flash Player, Java, Silverlight, WMP or Quicktime, PDF reader or other which you know you need is enabled.

Click multiple times on the back arrow

This is how I fixed it.
Right click on the back arrow and select SHOW FULL HISTORY
    Click on EXTENSIONS
    Disable Produtools Manuals
Save and enjoy your single click restored.
    Hope this helps

    It works?

I think the problem is preconcieved idea of how it works. Is it not it gives choices of where to go? By right click see choices or just hold click to see. Then choose. But then it is error multiple clicks goes back to previous page? maybe leads to getting redirect virus???

pbcopter is right. That is exactly what the issue is, not IE9 itself.
Well, yes and no. pbcopter did correctly describe what is happening... but there has been a change from IE8 to IE9 in how it handles adverts and history. So it could be said that there is an issue with IE9: e.g. this new "feature" sucks.

IE8 does not add the adverts as pages in history...

...and only one click on the back button take me back to cnn's main page.

IE9 requires multiple clicks or at least two:
(one click on the list of recent pages and one click on the page of interest*)

*unless there were so many advertizing pages that the page of interest is no longer displayed from that drop down - this is why I try to always open links in a new tab instead of "clicking thru".

Same problem here but ironically not at work, same OS

So the only solution I have found is to double click the back button, this works 95%

or get into the habit of opening links in a new tab...
    that way:
...you just close the new tab
...and you are back to where you started
...and you don't have to reload the previous page
(even though it should still be cached)

This works most of the time

Have tried all points mentioned so far, but back button still works intermitently so any other ideas welcome.
