Trouble resetting password in Windows Mail to new server password

Hi,

I recently suffered a trojan virus attach and ultimately have changed my password on my email server.

I have tried to reset it to the new password in Windows mail multiple times. It keeps reverting to the old password as the saved password, and I continually have to retype in the new password. I tried resetting the password to nothing, and rebooting, and the old password comes back again.

There must be a preference file or an ini file that I can edit. Can I do that without loosing my address book, etc.?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Daria

You might try clicking "Apply" before "OK" in the same window that you entered the password. (I'm guessing that since you are using Windows 7, your email program is Windows Live Mail, not Vista's Windows Mail, although the procedure would be the same anyway.)

Oh, I definately have tried that multiple times. I've tried about every combination of things on could possibly try just using the usual methods.

It is apparently just not saving new information, which is why I wondered if there is a preference file to edit by hand.

It is Windows Live Mail, but I'm not using it in the "Live" sense, it's just being used as the email program on my computer, rather than going though the Windows Live system.

There seems to be a connection betweeen IE and passwords saved on the PC. It often helps to do a complete IE reset: Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset (include "delete personal settings").

You could just delete the account in WLM, then recreate it as though it were a new account. Be sure to move any email stored with that account to the storage area (at least themporarily) since deleting an account also deletes the emails under that account.

That apparently is going to have to be the answer - and it's not a very effective one. Sometimes I get so aggrevated with Microsoft...

Oh well...

Thanks for your time and trouble.

I don't understand why it would not be very effective. You can test it by changing your email password a couple more times in the new account. If it works then it was effective; if not there may still be some problem with your system...maybe some malware residue. You could try another malware tool that works from an external CD/USB bootable drive like Windows Defender Offline. And of course there are tools for checking the file system like sfc /scannow and check disk.
