OK, what I did was to get into cmd promt and then right-click after the blinking line in the black window. This time I right-clicked on the actual words "command prompt." Duh... That worked, so I did the scan and got these results:
"...found corrupt files but...unable to fix some of them." Then I guess I should go to my computer icon and then type:
"C:\windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log." Is that where I should enter this link?
Later -- I typed the above on my computer address bar and got "Access is denied." ???
Run it a couple more times, it's common for it not to be able to fix everything the first time.
Make sure to restart after each. We'll get to the logs later.
Will do, derekimo. I'll give it all the chances it needs. Thanks for the info.
OK, I've done a total of four scans and I'm still getting the same message about corrupt files. What's next?
I guess you are still not able to log in to live mail right?
Can you download and run a scan with the free Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer just to make sure there is no infection causing this.
I know you said you would rather not uninstall/reinstall but I think that is the next step.
Yep, still unable to sign in. Meanwhile, people are emailing me that they can't open links I send them. Maybe that's their problem, but I'm having so many issues that I am paranoid!
Do you honestly think this is a malware issue? You know a whole lot more than I do, so I would defer to your opinion. If not, I'll just gird my loins and do the uninstall/reinstall. The reason I don't want to do it is that I don't want to lose the mail I've got. I imported my WLM email from Outlook Express, which I can no longer find.
I'm just wondering what made it stop responding and it is never a bad thing to make sure you are not infected. :)
So lets start with a malware scan just to be sure.
What anti-virus program are you using?
Just in case we do have to do the uninstall/reinstall here are a couple tutorials for exporting your mail and contacts, they have pictures too.
Windows Live Mail - Export and Import Email Messages
Windows Live Mail - Export and Import Contacts
WLM never stopped responding; it didn't ever respond after I downloaded it last week. I was able to register and get my email verified, but I still cannot sign in.
I'm running Windows Security Essentials, and that's all. The computer guy in my condo said to run something like AVG and Security Essentials would mess things up royally. So that's why I'm not using AVG.
So, off to the malware scan. If that doesn't work, I'll study the tutorials you sent and go that route. Thanks for spending all this time with me.
OK, I'm sorry for misunderstanding that it used to work.
Did you create or already have a windows live account?
Good choice on the security essentials too.
