Windows 7: Java and Firefox on 7 64bit

Windows 7 x64 beta

Java isn't working in FF for me either. OS is Windows 7 x64 beta. Tried FF 3.1b2 in combination with the 32-bit version of the latest Java, and as the poster above described, nothing happens when I try any page containing a Java applet. Java appears in my list of FF plugins. Tried this with a clean profile to ensure that no addons (noscript, adblock plus, etc) are interfering. Tried installing the 64-bit version of Java. Also as described above, Java is working fine in IE 8.

I'm really surprised that I haven't seen anything other than this single message thread and one bug report on Bugzilla with no votes and no replies (aside from mine) as I'm thinking this is probably going to be a problem for everyone who is running FF in Windows 7. Even today, a Google search just isn't making it seem as if anyone other than a few of us have noticed a problem.

Fix? Worked for me

I believe I have the fix as I was also having problems.

1. Install Java from their download page.
2. After install reboot (not sure if it's necessary but I did anyway)
3. Go to Control Panel (expanded view) and you'll see a Java (32bit) icon.
4. Click on Icon and Java Control Panel will open.
5. Click Advanced Tab
6. Click + sign For Java Plug-in
7. Uncheck Box that says Enable Next Generation plug in.
8. Close your browser (if it was open). I think I rebooted here, too..probably not necessary.
9. Go to the Java Test Page and click the version link at top of page.
10. You should see a pink box (I did) with version you have installed.

I also found this blog that shows why Java might not be working on x64 Vista and how to fix it....I am certain it applies for x64 Windows 7 as well.

Thanks for the fix, VegasDen! I'm running Win 7 64-bit and I had the problem as well. You're right, reboot not necessary after changing Java options.

Windows 7 beta

Another fix I came across that worked involved copying npt.dll, npjpi160_11.dll, and npoji610.dll from C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin into C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\plugins . Worked for me.

This method worked for me as well. I tried the other method first, but the option was greyed out strangely enough...
