WLM: "An unknown error has occurred"

Well, that's helpful information.

This has been going on for several days. I get the message when I am attempting to delete a read message. I've tried closing & re-opening WLM, but I still get the message. It appears to be totally non-selective. It lets me delete some messages, but not others. After one of these episodes, all of my buttons go gray.

Maybe a repair will help. Go to programmes and features, click on Windows Live Essentials and you will given a choice to uninstall or repair Windows Live Essentials.

I've been debating doing just that, but I am quite the novice & don't know if I'll lose all my contacts, unanswered emails, etc.

WLM is doing very peculiar things -- like duplicating my "contacts" entries. That seemed a simple fix, but I still haven't had any success with it. It also put my "sent" mail into "drafts". Not to mention the "unknown error." Those are small inconveniences I'm working around, but it just seems ridiculous to me that there could be so many problems. Anyway, I will have to download the 2009 version since (with the help of derekimo) I am finally able to open pps files from my email, but only with the 2007 viewer. Might lose all of those delicate settings with an uninstall/reinstall, too.

Hi notty!

You shouldn't lose anything with the repair, you also don't have to download anything or reinstall to repair.

Like BrightBlessings said, you'll be given the choice to uninstall or repair, just choose repair and let it do it's thing.

So, I did the repair. I haven't used WLM enough since then to know if I'll get the "unknown error" message again, but the following problems still remain unresolved:

1) Duplicate "contacts" listings when trying to forward an email (there is no pattern to this)

2) "Sent" messages being sent to "drafts" (I deleted everything from "drafts" after the repair was done, so maybe this got fixed?)

3) "Sent" items folder always indicates that I have sent two emails. When I open the folder, there are hundreds. Is this a time-controlled default?

None of this is earth-shattering, just annoying. I can work around any of it. Who says one has to understand annoying things (or people), anyway?

OK, just got the "unknown error" message when I tried to delete an email. ??? I guess that make four unresolved items.

My wife was having this same issue and I kind of traced it back to her anti virus which also included an email scan. She was running Microsoft Essentials and I removed that and loaded Avast without email scan and the problem has gone away.

Where is the email scan on MSE?

Let's assume it falls under "Real Time Protection".
Bottom line, removing MSE and installing aVast without running email scan fixed the problem.

pmaxon -- You need to know that you are dealing with someone who doesn't understand anything about anything related to computer stuff. So, are you saying to remove Microsoft Security Essentials? That seems pretty drastic.

I'm just reporting what I did to correct the same problem. I uninstalled MSE and replaced it with the free aVast anti-virus software and no longer had the issue. It was nothing drastic at all...

That may have fixed their problem and may fix yours but I doubt it will be the same scenario.

MSE doesn't have an email scanner, it will scan attachments or pictures you download.

I think we should try an uninstall/reinstall of your 2009 version of live mail or if you want your ribbon back we can update your version and see if it fixes it.

There is also the sfc/scannow that couldn't repair some files before so that could be where all these problems are related back to.

@pmaxon, I am not discounting what appears to have worked for you, and your contributions are as welcome as everyones and appreciated. No disrespect intended.

We'll see how nottaclue wants to move next.

OK, I'll go for the updated version, but do I need to then update the pps viewer (which is the 2007 edition)? And I won't lose any of my stuff, right? I lost all of my saved emails, even though they managed the trip from Outlook Express to WLM. Somehow, WLM ate them a couple of weeks after I successfully transported them over. It's just been a barrel of laughs.

No it doesn't scan politicians, it couldn't fix that corruption anyway.

Also what about your missing emails? Are they all gone?

There was no "export mail" under "Tools." I got adventurous and clicked on "Sync all email accounts," but nothing happened.
