Ummm, I'm not seeing any 'Mark this thread as solved' link at the top of the page, or anywhere else on the page either.

Java / Windows 7 / Firefox

After Hurricane Sandy helped burn out my motherboard, I went out and purchased a new desktop. It came with Windows 7. I have been using Mozilla Firefox 16.0.2 on my Windows XP machine. I had Java 7.9 running. I needed Java to run a parachat session.

Now on the new machine, the Java installs all work fine. But when I go to verify if Java is installed, it just spins away. Doesnt happen with IE or Chroms, just with
Firefox.

I could easily go to an earlier level of Firefox, but before I did that, I wanted to see if anyone else has had the same problem (as reported in the top of this thread)

Did you install the 32bit or 64bit java?

Java help center

Why should I uninstall older versions of Java from my system?

Which Java download should I choose for my 64-bit Windows operating system?

Sorry, I took FF and Java off my system when I experienced odd behavior, first Java, then FF. So I can't give you real-world advice.

Although, I reiterate the back level Java advice given in a previous post (current back level is now 6.37 instead of 6.35).

Java and Windows 7

I installed both versions to try them out.

I finally isolated the problem. It was with ZoneAlarm Firewall settings. I just shut the firewall off for a second, and everything worked. Turned it back on, things failed as before. So, now I just made sure all the applications were properly permitted in Zone Alarm.

(It was easier to uninstall ZoneAlarm, then re-install it. DIdnt need to issue any specific access that way)

Ok, the way I understand Java is
A 32bit browser - a 32bit Java
A 64bit Browser - a 64bit Java
Use both - need both

Most people use a 32bit Browser - you have to specifically launch 64bit broswers
- or in the case of FF install it and launch it

ZoneAlarm..... why didn't you say you had ZoneAlarm?
All joking aside. please fill in your system specs on the forum, someone might have picked up on that (someone else, not me... maybe eventually, but not at first) and given you a quicker answer

Click on the Easy system specs in my signature and run the tool - it does all the work for you so you don't have to type much. The tool doesn't always get the make and model correct - please enter that manually and specify whether you have a desktop or laptop.

Very good tech sluething and thanks for posting your resolution. I'll keep ZoneAlarm tucked away as a soultion on other communication issues.
