How do I stop new tabs opening

When I look something up on Google, the link I clicked on comes up in a new tab and not in the same tab that Google was on. How can I sort this problem out?

Brink: The always switch to new tabs when they are created is unchecked.
Flatiron: Thankyou so much, what you said to do has worked
