Links to PNG files don't open in IE9, prompt for download

I just noticed this problem now since my new computer, but when I click on internet links to PNG files, it won't open the PNG in internet explorer, but give me the prompt to download or open in default program (which I set as MS Paint)

I've looked for solutions online but they are all badly outdated (some going as far back as 2000) or don't apply to Internet Explorer 9.

Can anyone help?

what addons are installed in IE9 on your machine?

How to manage add-ons in Internet Explorer 9

I believe you need an addon for IE9--however--you don't for IE7 or most other browsers

Which one would I need? I have Adobe Shockwave flash object, PDF Link helper, Windows Media Player, Silverlight, XML DOM Document 3.0, "Research", Oracle America, Java Plug-in 10.5.1, Java Plug-in SSV Helper, Java Plug-in 2 SSV Helper, Norton Identity protection, Norton Vulnerability protection

the assistance that I've suggested is from a few quick searches--I don't use IE at all--not sure which addon you may need...

I just checked on another machine that is using IE9--the 'default' set of addons allows png files to be opened--that would suggest that one(or more) of your addons are creating a conflict...

? after changing default file assoc to IE--did you restart browser? and/or machine?

Well, I have searched and have not been able to find a solution to my particular issue: with IE9 set as default browser, when I click on a link in an Outlook message, the link will only open if IE is not already running. In other words, with IE closed if I click a link in Outlook, it will open, but...
