Browsers can't connect, other things can!

I have just started having a problem that I can see others have had in the past, where my browsers (Firefox and Internet Explorer) have suddenly stopped being able to display webpages, but only on one of the computers on my local network. In Firefox I get a message "the connection was reset" for every page including connections to local devices (I can't bring up my router page, for example). Here are some of the things I think might be relevant:

  • I have checked to make sure I am not using proxies in either Firefox or Internet Explorer, or in my System Settings
  • This problem seemed to start occurring after I lost all power in my apartment
  • The 64-bit version of Internet explorer DOES still work
  • I can connect to a range of other things (Dropbox, Windows Update, etc)
  • I can ping websites (google.com, for example)
  • I am using Windows 7 x64 Premium
  • The problem is only occurring on one computer on my local network

Please help!

loss of power could have caused file corruption in windows.
My first step would be this.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
It's a basic check of the windows system files.

I have just tried SFC /SCANNOW but that didn't find any integrity violations.

Further to my previous post - I have tried disabling the Windows Firewall, AVG and Malwarebytes, all to no avail. I have also tried using the Norton Removal Tool (even though I don't have Norton installed, I've seen other posts wihere this seemed to work for people who didn't have Norton installed), but that didn't work either.

Welcome to Seven Forums mbagshaw. Only 32 bit browsers are not working? Try this, it will do no harm even if it is not the fix.

Start> In search box type cmd> Right click cmd.exe in results above and choose Run as administrator> In advanced command prompt type:

netsh winsock reset

Enter

Restart PC

Hopefully that will fix it
