Discovery> I created a new user account, logged on to it, Java works in IE9.
Looks like the root cause is a corrupted user profile.
Now to figure out how to get my settings to the new profile.

Well, copied my profile to the new one created per these instructions Fix a corrupted user profile
Java problem moved with the copied files.
So in the new user profile, java worked until I copied in my old profile.
I also did a system restore to a time prior to the issue cropping up, java still not working.
Any ideas what I should try next?
