Windows 7: java won't run in IE9, will run in Firefox and Chrome

java won't run in IE9, will run in Firefox and Chrome

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Java won't run in IE9 but will run in Firefox and Chrome. When I go to Verify Java Version at Java.com in Firefox and Chrome they return Version 7 Update 9 but the test never returns a result in IE9. I uninstalled and reinstalled Java, Java add-ons are enabled. Security settings look ok.
Some sites return "An add-on for this website failed to run". Same sites in Firefox and Chrome work fine. Java games don't work in IE9 but same games play in Firefox and Chrome.
Any thought on where I can start looking?

Edit:
The site http://www.javatester.org/enabled.html says IE9 can't run Java while it says Firefox and Chrome can run Java.

Have you tried resetting IE9 Go tools in the upper right hand corner of your IE9 browser. Select internet options then the advanced tab down at the bottom click reset then reset again you should get a pop up box that will get three green check marks after that restart IE9 and test your Java. You will have to reset your home page if you do not use MSN as homepage,

Yep, tried it but just in case, I uninstalled Java, reset IE9, Restarted Windows, Installed Java from previously saved file, Opened IE9, Tested Java, Nope Didn't work. Retested Java from Firefox and Chrome, both have java working.

Why not install straight from the Java website instead of the previous saved file? Worth a shot.

Did both, Tried installing many times from website, didn't work. Saved the java install file from the website so I could install right after a restart without opening IE9, didn't work either.
I also used javara, it is supposed to remove all traces of previously installed java versions, then reintsalled java, Tested again, didn't work.
I'm going to try installing the 64 bit java version although I only use 32 bit browsers.

After installing 64 bit java and running 64 bit IE9 the java verifies properly.
However, 32 bit IE9 still doesn't verify java properly. Very strange.
I'm running out of ideas.

I unstalled java again and I noticed that Sun Java Console is still listed as Enabled in the IE9 Add-on list. I wonder if that is associated with my issue? I haven't been able to figure out how to remove it.

Found a registry key that referenced "Sun Java Console", deleted it and it no longer appears in the Add-ons list.
However, "Deployment Toolkit" from Oracle appeared in the Add-ons list. Used CCleaner to remove it. It doesn't show up now.
I'm going to try a reboot and reinstall java to see what happen, fingers crossed.
Java should just work this is getting far too complicated.
New information, after reinstall of java, still not working but oddly, this time there are more add-ons listed.
