Couple of things you can try. Sometimes malware can cause problems for IE. Run a full updated scan using your installed anti-virus suite. No AV product is 100% effective 100% of the time (if there was such a thing we'd all be using it.) So I'd also run a couple of free on-demand scanners. The more scans you run that come back "no malware found" the more likely it is your computer is malware free.

    Malwarebytes

    ESET Online Scanner

    SuperAntispyware

    HitmanPro

Once you're reasonably sure your computer is malware free you could try resetting IE9 to its default settings.

    Internet Explorer - Reset

If still no joy I'd check for any damaged or corrupt system files that might be interfering with IE. Run a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If you're still having problems this Microsoft article has some additional suggestions including how to completely uninstall/reinstall IE9.

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP

Please post back if anything helped or not.

Glad to hear you've got a partial fix. But it sounds like there may be some other gremlins still lurking about. Did you run the malware scans and system file checker scan? If not I'd still recommend doing them. As far as reinstalling IE9 I will leave that strictly up to you. Just a couple of personal opinions to make things more confusing for you.

IE8 is more prone to malware, hacks, attacks and other assorted problems. IE9 has better security features already built in that IE8 doesn't have. For that reason alone I prefer 9 over 8. However, as you've already discovered, 9 caused you some issues. I don't think it's been established with 100% certainty why IE9 did what it did. So, if you reinstall, you may be faced with the same problems. On the other hand, if 9 became damaged or corrupt because of a power glitch, a weird combination of keystrokes like if you accidentally hit a few extra keys, etc, then reinstalling a fresh non-damaged, non-corrupted version should solve the issue. Internet Explorer is also an integral part of the Windows 7 operating system and is tied in to such things as Windows Updates. So maybe you installed an update to Windows 7 that didn't go quite as planned and it damaged IE9. Lots of mysterious and strange goings on under the hood.

If you reinstall IE9 and thing don't work out, at least you know IE8 will work. :)

Reimage has been around for a while. I had a problem with my computer about a year ago and gave them a try. Nothing they did worked because I had a bad memory module. Their "diagnostics" only work on software issues, not hardware issues, so they didn't do any good for me. Other people have had good results but I think their prices are too high.

Anyway, did you try the other steps before you got to the Reimage option? Registering VBScript.DLL; Fix the Zones Registry Key - Microsoft Fixit; or the manual registry edit?
