Download CCleaner and then use it to Uninstall Firefox completely. "Finish" the Uninstall by running the Cleaner and then by running the Registry and allow it to Fix All Selected Issues.

Firefox and other problems with W7

I ended up doing a clean install and retrieving essential files from windows.old, plus images I had made.
I suspect that many of the browser, general freezing and slowness and problems with a number of applications I experienced were due to the use of Windows Easy Transfer- on the second clean install I opted not to use this.
Firefox is still prone to freezes, but less than before.
Thanks for the tip about Safari!

Windows 7 Pro x64

My experience with the last few released builds of Firefox has been all positive under Win7 x64.

In using FF over the last four year I have found that in almost all cases a corrupted profile or a misbehaving add-on is the primary cause of FF instability. I have even experienced add-ons that once behaved but then somehow became corrupted (Google toolbar, for example).

Before throwing in the towel completely with an unstable FF under Win7, my recommendation would be to first create a brand new profile and over a day or two install your extensions from fresh downloads from the Mozilla site.

Many of the better add-ons have backup/restore settings features to allow you to backup your customizations of the add-on, so back up the settings under the old profile and then import them after you have your new profile and add-ons up and running.

And finally, check out Mozilla's list of known problematic add-ons to see if your favorites cause problems: Problematic extensions - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

Windows 7 x86 and x64 - RTM

Excellent advice Peter...I've got Firefox running on 6 different Win7 installs and I have never but a few crashes on one particular machine (I'm sure it was a botched up profile in combination with several beta installs).

Do a clean install as per guidance provided by Peter.

Sincere thanks for your wise advice. Even after a complete reinstall of the OS, and a clean install of FF with creation of a new profile, the problem persists. I have a few add-ons including Google Toolbar, so will follow your recommendations and start afresh with no add-ons, then add them one at a time.

Firefox update certainly helps!

It's comforting to know that we were not alone, and not making some fundamental error(s) with FF!
While not perfect, the 3.5.5 is more cooperative on my machine. Opens more rapidly. Still occasional freezes, but for much shorter times, despite a completely new install of FF using the updated version and no add-ons.
Am going to add one or two such as Google toolbar ( a known problem for some) and test it out.
Cheers from a fellow FF devotee.

Firefox woes

I have been very lucky then, until this W7 install, as I have never had any problems with FF, other than it sticking in memory after being closed. I ran it very happily with W7 RC, with a dozen or so add-ons, - so am puzzled as to why it is being a pain in the RTM on the same machine.
IE8 runs well, but I have to figure out how to be able to print- get blank pages with text at the bottom indicating a temp file- no amount of googling answers to this dilemma has helped.
