Sorry if I misunderstood you. You can create a complete system backup, and the size will only be as large as the used space on your drive. IE: if you have a 100GB drive, but windows and all files are only using 30GB, then the image will use no more than the 30GB. A complete image is better stored on a 2nd drive, in case of complete drive failure.

Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

For just a System restore point, you can also create one manually

    System Restore Point - Create

You can also backup User and System files

    Backup User and System Files

Windows will create it's own system restore points, if you have System Protection turned on. You can also select how much space the System Protection will use.

System Protection - Turn On or Off

System Protection - Change Disk Space Usage

I personally use an internal 500GB drive to store system images I create every week using a program called Acronis True Image (paid program). Many here use the free Macrium Reflect

For a laptop, you would want an external HDD. Storing the image on the same drive as the OS would not protect you from HDD failure, but it could save you from OS failure, or even virus infection.

Let us know if you mean something different, and we'll try and help. A Guy

Try it in Safe Mode with Networking, and see if it works there.

    Safe Mode

If so, I would try disabling extensions and try it again in normal mode.

Manage your extensions - Google Chrome Help

If it still doesn't work in regular mode with extensins disabled, I would try a clean start to see what is conflicting.
