Firefox & Gmail Question: Close Tab After Sending Email?

Hi Everyone,

My question regards Firefox, Tabs and Gmail. I hate Gmail, but I have no choice but to use it for the moment so I went ahead and enabled Gmail as my default mail handler in Firefox (version 19.0.2). I also enabled it so that when I click an email link it opens a Compose mail window in a new tab. The problem I'm having is that once the email is sent that tab stays open and doesn't close.

My question then is how can I get this tab to close after I send the email? I've been Googling for a solution for a week or so and haven't found anything so I thought I'd come here and ask, since this forum has always been great at helping me with these things.

It's not possible. From Firefox's perspective, it's just another web page on the internet for it to display to its user (you). It doesn't know that it's doing e-mail: it's just displaying a web page for you. So my best advice is to press Ctrl+F4 to close the tab when you're done with it.

Hi TwoCables. Love the nickname by the way. That's weird, because I remember a time when it used to close all on it's own. Anyway, I got HostGator back and now I can use Thunderbird again, so I'm happy :)

Hey, I wonder if it's a setting in gMail itself.

I though that, too, but I couldn't find anything. I searched all the settings and even Googled around, but nothing.

Then I wonder if it's something that gMail just doesn't do anymore.

I don't know, but it would be worth finding out—even if it can't be done anymore. Just in case someone else comes along and has the same issue, at least they would have some kind of answer. It's really weird, because I was doing this only a couple weeks or so ago, so it would have to be something they changed real recently.

This was before I reformatted my computer, which I did last Saturday. I had just received CS6, which I needed for my school, but I already had CS5 installed and wanted to get rid of it all before I installed CS6. I had also been having some buggy PC issues so come Saturday I decided to do a clean format and then install the new software. I know that just reformatting my computer didn't change the Gmail-CloseTab thing, but before the reformat I had been using an older version of Firefox.

I was using an older version because there were certain add-ons I liked and they weren't compatible with the newer versions. I thought about this right after the reformat so I installed an older version of FF, but even after that I still couldn't get the Gmail-Close-Tab thing to work. It's definitely a mystery.

This will be off topic, but you can disable add-on compatibility checking by adding this 'False' Boolean entry into about:config:

extensions.checkCompatibility.19.0

Where "19.0" is, you just type in the version of Firefox that you're using. If they released a 19.1, then "19.0" still works. It will only cease to work if they release version 20. So if/when that happens, you just make a new 'False' Boolean entry and you right-click the old one and choose "Reset". Always do this before upgrading so that it's ready to go.
