Solved pop-up blocker running outside of the browser

How do I locate and disable a pop-up blocker on my Windows 7 computer? I don't think it's in the browser because I created an exception for this URL in both Firefox and IE and still have a problem. It was suggested to me that it may be embedded in taskbar (toolbar?) at the bottom of the screen, maybe near the time display.

Hello susan8231,

Gary is talking about the User CP at the top of Forums' page:

Then you go to Edit Options of the left of the screen and scroll down to the Messaging & Notification section.

Hello ruste84,

Thanks for the response. Following your instructions, that appears to only pertain to messages and notifications from this forum. Perhaps I misunderstood, but I don't see how that can help with a pop-up blocker affecting other website that I may visit. Thanks

Oh. I think understand now. In IE go to Tools -> hover your cursor over Pop-Up Blocker and select Pop-up Blocker Settings. This is where you added the forum URL, correct? At the bottom of the window, you'll see Blocking Level. You can set it to High, Medium, or Low, whichever works for you. Or you can add more sites to the exception list.

Sorry Susan, I misunderstood your question. In Firefox Pop ups should be blocked by default.

I've done that in both Firefox and IE for the website I'm trying to post to. Still unable to post. A support person from that website suggested the problem could be a pop-up blocker running outside of the browser. That's what I'm trying to figure out, if there's something on my computer preventing my posting to that website.

Check your antivirus. Some of them try to block pop ups too (which one are you using?)

I don't get a message that a pop-up blocker prevented me from posting to the website. I just see a message that there was an error. The firefox toolbars are all acceptable.

Is there such a thing as a pop-up block running outside of a browser?

So the question I asked in my previous post is NOT what you are seeing?

can you give us a screenshot of the error message. is it the same error on both browsers?

also, you can download processexplorer to look at your running processes. this will show more in-depth information than the taskmanager in windows: Process Explorer

If it is running outside of the browser then it would be process running on its own.

Like a program that was downloaded maybe bundled with other software (these 'programs' are 'meant' to help people by providing services that you didn't request, don't need and didn't know were being installed) so they are bundled with other downloads so you don't have to request something you didn't know you didn't need... sorry /rant

You can post a screenshot of the processes here and we can look to see if any of them are know programs

I think I just figured out the problem and it wasn't a technical issue at all, just something quirky at the website. Thanks to all of you very much for your time - sorry to have taken your attention with a non issue :D
