Need help diagnosing IE9, fails to run

    Good afternoon all,

I have a wierd problem I discovered this morning. I cannot get my IE (9) to stay running. When i click on the icon and it starts up it says "not responding" and then it just closes right up again. I tried both the 32 and 64 bit versions and they both fail to stay running.

I am at a loss how to diagnose this issue. I would reset it if it would stay running, but...lol I can't.

Can anyone point me in a diagnostic direction?

Well, I tried to to start my IE with the add ons disabled, then tried a Reset with out loosing the personal info with no luck.

In desperation, I did a reset WITH the personal info removed, and BANG it opened up to IE10!!
I guess it was in the process of updating itself and got hung somehow.

Boy was that a weird experience.

Oh, well, I can console myself now with the knowledge that I have all night to learn my new browser....Guess I mark it solved

OK, I have to mark this as UNSOLVED. I still have the same problem, just now I have it with IE10 instead of IE9! After I shut the program down and tried to restart it it would crash again. Restarting the computer would not help either.

And now resetting it does not making a difference. It still opens, runs for 15-20 seconds, saying "not responding" and then crashes.

I need help figuring this out.

    Thanks in advance!

Could a crashing shockwave player cause this?

I have been getting messages for about 3 days now saying the shockwave player has crashed. I think shockwave is used by IE, not FF.

I removed both flash players and installed the newest versions this morning. I think shockwave is IN one of the Adobe flash players, right?

But i still have the shockwave crashing.

    thought everyone should know this.
If i am wrong, please let me know.

I believe Shock Wave is now part of I.E.10.
Have you checked Windows Updates after installing I.E.10.

Firefox and ie of any version use different versions of shockwave,
Adobe flash player does have some basic components of shockwave built in but there is also a stand alone shockwave download which is what is probably crashing,
Video trouble shooter, scroll down to the Java section and use the check your version links,
Uncheck the Ask toolbar install from the Java site.

Some tests if advice already suggested did not work. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and see if IE will stay open and work

    Safe Mode

If IE stays open, try a clean start to see if there is a conflict

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

As mentioned, shockwave is a separate program, you can also uninstall it if needed to test.

    Download Shockwave stand-alone installer, uninstaller

Hey guys, thanks very much for all the advise!! I spent time going thru it all and the real problem turned out to be IE10. From the time it tried to installed itself and run it would just crashed itself. I removed IE10, leaving IE9, which starts and runs. I tried reinstalling IE10, but again it just crashes. Not sure why though, so I will stay with IE9 for the time being.

One problem though, I cannot download anything with IE now!!

When you click on the gear icon and click on view downloads nothing happens!
I found out the folder for downloads is missing for some reason!!
I had to open FF and download the Adobe flash for IE from there and reinstall it.

I followed the tutorial: Internet Explorer - Change Default Download Location and could not find the folder anywere.

When you download with IE, you should get the option to Save as as one of the choices. You can then save to your desired location, such as desktop. If you don't tell it where to save, but just choose Save, it will try to put it in the place it feels is right, the Documents folder, the Music folder, the Pictures folder, etc., unless you have set a default. File types that IE thinks might be harmful, such as exe files, are saved to the temporary Internet files folder first, then copied to the folder you've specified.

Do you get the save dialog pop up at the bottom on the screen when clicking on a download? If so, if you choose a save as location, does that work> If you just choose Save, it will choose where this will be, it may be your downloads folder as well. Located in C:\Users\(User name). Is there a Downloads folder in that location? Is that the folder you say you cannot locate? If so, just create a new one there. A Guy

No, in fact I do NOT get that dialog box at the bottom pop up either. I am wondering if I really have two problems now with IE?

I am thought about making a new folder for downloads, but I am not sure where to create it. I mean the OE folder is in Microsoft area of the hard drive, right? I prefer to download to the main download folder though, but only when I realized I was not able to download from IE9 that I found the second problem.

PS - My shockwave and flash have been reinstalled and are working fine, for now.

    So my current issues are:

    1) cannot use IE10 (wish I could figure out why)
    2) unable to download from IE9

I think I may reinstall IE10 and they try to boot into safe mode and see if IE10 will work there.
    I will report back soon
