Enough is Enough IE8 currently a SHOWSTOPPER

Hi all

I really DO like W7 but for work IE 8 has really become a SHOWSTOPPER.

We can't really recommend going forward to W7 upgrades UNTIL this thing is FIXED.

At the place where I'm on on contract we are using Portals with a SAP technology known as WEB DYNPRO. This relies VERY HEAVILY on JAVA (and lesser on ABAP to SAP guys) and a STABLE IE browser.
for those interested in web dynpro here's a start. To access the generated application (the last step) you need the browser.

Well even AFTER Tuesday 13 Oct updates IE8 is still crashing TOO much (on 3 test systems I'm using W7 x-64 ultimate, W-7 X-86 Pro, W7-x-64 Pro).

This in a production environment unfortunately is 100% NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Sorry MS -- I'm of course continuing to enjoy and use W7 but until IE8 is FIXED big time we've got a NO GO to W7 for the next system upgrade.

I'm sure people who NEED the browser in a production environment (and don't forget also E-commerce) must have BETTER reliability than it's shown so far.

XP with IE6 NEVER crashed as far as I remember. IE 7 didn't really last long - maybe that was a sign of things to come.

Meanwhile on my own system I'm using FF until IE8 is fixed.

This would be a good opportunity to introduce many of your colleagues to a new browser.

You seem quite confident that the crash is caused by IE8 code. Is that because you've done some investigating to understand the crash condition?

I have no particular love for one browser over another, but I can't remember the last time either IE8 or FF have crashed on me, and I use them pretty much interchangeably. That doesn't of course mean that your issues are not caused by IE8 bugs, but I'd suggest a bit of analysis before jumping to conclusions, especially if it's a workplace thing and you're making decisions.

that's MY laptop - I can run what I like on that one -- no probs because we also have a 100 % internal free access Wireless network available for "general unrestricted" internet access. Accessing the net from the company machines is of course a bit more restrictive -. We can still use the "Wireless" system via the company VPN to get access to company apps - often works faster than the internal LAN .

It's definitely IE8 - I've tested on CLEAN install machines with absolutely NO extra apps installed on at least 3 decently specced machines. The W7 versions are all RTM from Technet so these should be 100% clean -- I also re-downloaded some ISO's again just to make sure the images weren't screwed up and used DIFFERENT Burning software to ensure it wasn't a "corrupt image file" problem.

When I changed the version to NL and the keyboard to Dutch (Azerty - Dutch Belgian) the crashes disappeared for the most part. (Worked quite a lot in Holland and Belgium so can speak NL and FR as well).

Somehow this version doesn't like ENGLISH (GB) with UK keyboards very much.

I've got another machine with US English and English -INTL keyboard and that also seems to be working but as I'm currently in the UK on contract these get arounds aren't really acceptable.

When I test stuff I'm usually a real stickler before I let "stuff go out of the door" into production.

There does seem to be an issue with the language and locales.

Well, if you're quite confident that an entirely clean machine (no AV, no IE add-ons at all) crashes in the same place, then there's nothing much for it. However, if you've got even the slightest doubt, it may be worthwhile to analyse a crash dump - perhaps there's more to it than meets the eye.

Either way, I'm impressed by the number of languages you speak :)

Strine is generally not considered a human language

You don't metion whether you tested IE8 running on Windows XP. That would be the only real test to say it was just IE8 or a Win7/IE8 combination. Have you tried running IE8 in compatibility mode or IE7 on Win7? Do you have the latest Java update? Lots of other settings such as user rights or internet settings might cause problems.

I'm typing this on a Windows XP Virtual machine with IE8

Nary a problem.

Actually the W7 / IE8 combo seems to be caused by a SAP GUI application with the combination of GB English keyboard and GB English locales - spent about 4 hours on the phone today to some really HORRIBLE Off shored facility where after about 10 mins I probably would have made even the odious lot at the British National Party feel proud.

We use a lot of web access via JAVA and SAP Web Dynpro apps which are acessed by the IE browser.

The bozos in the off shore place don't understand the difference between UK (or GB) English keyboard and locales and US version. They might be similar BUT NOT THE SAME.

Certain keystrockes triggered error in the browser / WEB DYNPRO combinations.

The SAP GUI also had a BACK level Visual C++ and JAVA run time modules in them (Thankyou Off shore center for not doing your job properly).

-- you wait till you see my Overtime bill for this month - It'll make those British Members of Parliament and their expenses seem like paupers.

The XP system I am typing this on has an Icelandic keyboard - most of the English characters follow more closely the US International English version.

Anyway -- am going (finally) to bed now with a nice large glass of real MALT whisky well deserved.
